Schrade XX?

So, I just picked this up today after finding it in the back of the local Army Navy surplus store knife display case. It's a Schrade 2-blade with what appear to be Delrin scales. But here's what's weird (to me): there are two sets of "XX"s stamped on each side of the tang. The back appear to be machine-stamped, while the front looks hand-scratched. Anyone know what the deal is with this knife?

factory second. apparently they found something about that knife not up to par and cast it aside.

Ah, that makes sense. There's a very minor gap on one end of the springs and the pen blade has pretty poor snap.

Still, no regrets for $5.

Being a second makes it interesting. Doing the math, I'm sure there

Well.... it aint as cool as an XX but....
I noticed this one "appeared' to be a 285 Uncle Henry with a Walden blade. <<VERY ODD.. so I bawt it ! !
After arriving by mail, and upon closer inspection, it appears its a WALDEN 293 (pic att) with some
Uncle Henry scales.
It has 293 stamped on rear tang JUST LIKE my 293 pictured..
Story goes, it belonged to an OLD employee of Schrade.
The Henry has beautifully milled (filed) backsprings, if that helps...
OK you Schrade pros... lemme hear ya... and make me feel it !! LOLOLL

I have seen others with the same worked liners, this is not a lunchbox knife.

Dave & woseyj, Them marks will come out OK. 220 first, and then some 440 grit paper and a good rub with Simichrome will make 'em cleaned to mint !

I have a few of those knives also Fran. I'll get right on it with the Emery paper and polish, although I find a nice old used Rasp quicker than the Emery paper. I'll let you see them next time we meet. Wow! that's what friends are for!!

Mr B, if that is an early 285UH there should be a serial number on the inside of the liner towards the top edge. may need a Mag glass to read it.
The early S-W Uncle Henry knives had milled liners in particular the 897UH knives that came in the brown hinged card boxes.

If that 285 was made early in 1973, it should have a Schrade Walden blade in it. I think Walden was dropped from the name about May or June of 1973.

It looks like what MAY (no sure thing when talking about Schrade) have happened is someone mixed up a 293 blade and put it in a 285UH frame. Both frames are 3-7/8 inches.
Actually what probably happened (now that I think about it more) is that said employee substituted a inner assembly (both blades, center liner and backsprings) for the 293 into the 285 frame.

Remember 1973 was after the Swinden System came into use. The employee would not be putting loose blades into a frame, but the whole inner assembly.
I think your knife just got a 293 assembly by mistake.

I do believe Russell is right, that the early Uncle Henrys did have milled liners.
Schrade often put milled liners or jimped liners or backsprings in knives when they wanted to show that they were higher quality, like the Silver Anniversary 34OT, or the Granddads Old Timer Barlow.

Blister, You threw me for a loop when you said it had a Walden blade in it.
Walden Knife Co.was a different company, 1874 to 1923 (dates per Goins) in Walden NY.
Walden Knife Co. and Schrade Walden were two different companies. But of course they were somehow related....too late for that tonight.

GDOT barlow to go with the 34.

Hard to say 3 times fast or work into a sentence but I like it!

LT was the one who introduced me to the term "jimping."
He also told me that they had special machines that they ran the liners through to "jimp" them.
