Pins for a brass cover pocket knife
Gday gents,
I am about to start work on a brass covered pocket knife marked
“ Whittingslowe Product
Part no. 41 “. Sorry I can't t provide a photo. I can provide a link to one online but I am not sure if that is acceptable.
The knife is constructed a bit different to the usual pocket knife in that the brass covers act as liners and the inside liner/separator is of steel.
The blades are badly worn, so my intention is to replace with some new unsharpened blades I purchased off Ebay years ago.
My question is the pin material.
They look to be stainless and being downunder my access to American sellers of suitable pins is possible but hugely expensive and takes forever.
It means I will have to find something here in Oz. I am considering some stainless steel welding wire.
What are your opinions on using stainless welding wire ?
Thanks Ozwelder

Hi guys
Me again,
I went looking for the blades-and could not find them but instead found some 3.20mm /I/8” pins which I bought withe blades and forgot about them. The pins are not stainless but can only be nickel silver - whooo hooo!.
No names OK but a certain someone needs to have a big clean up.
Cheers

Hey Ozwelder, I am glad that you found what you needed!
I have not tried stainless welding wire, but I believe that it would work great on a knife. Stainless is much harder to peen, but it will. I have used nails with good results, but of course they are susceptible to rust.
I have used some brass brazing rods before, and it worked well for brass pins.

If you need steel pins, coat hanger wire is a good choice. It is relatively soft and peens very well. The stuff I have now is either .082" or .088", but other sizes exist too.

Me too Bill, sometimes see them at garage sales, then stock up. The plastic ones don't work as well.Bill DeShivs wrote: ↑Thu May 29, 2025 7:12 pm Wire coat hangers are getting hard to find!

Ask around a shop or garage that has a uniform service, I have hangers coming out of my ears from work uniforms they will too.OLDE CUTLER wrote: ↑Thu May 29, 2025 9:19 pmMe too Bill, sometimes see them at garage sales, then stock up. You misunderstood what I was asking. Why are you using them for knife pins

Because if you need a steel pin that size (or smaller), they make wonderful pins.

Re: Pins for a brass cover pocket knife
As Bill mentioned, steel pins made from coat hanger wire work very well for knives that have iron or steel bolsters. The wire is soft enough so it peens very nicely. Some German made knives have steel pins used with nickel silver bolsters also. Only a little prep is needed to spin the wire with a drill and some sandpaper to take the paint off.

I have just checked all our coat hangers and there are very few suitable candidates.
Fencing wire is starting to appeal to me.
