Buck 110 variants

Hoyt Buck produced the first Buck Knife in 1902. Hoyt and his son Al moved to San Diego and set up shop as H.H. Buck & Son in 1947. Al Buck revolutionized the knife industry in 1964 with the infamous Model 110 Folding Hunter. The company's innovative history and attention to quality have made for many great collectible knives.

Buck 110 variants

Post by Rockingkj »

Having joined the forum had made me dig out some collections I had not looked at for a while. Variations of the Buck 110 from inverted USA and stopped at 4 dot knives. No way close to all the possible knives but a decent pile every one different. The one line 110 I put in my display of One line knives.

Very nice collection of Folding Hunters. OH
Deep in the guts of most men is buried the involuntary response to the hunter's horn, a prickle of the nape hairs, an acceleration of the pulse, an atavistic memory of his fathers, who killed first with stone, and then with club...Robert Ruark

Nice. It takes a good eye to spot the differences.

Thanks. The differences are pretty small and interesting to me as the history of 110 evolution. The majority of the worlds knife users don’t even suspect there were changes.

Here lately, I’ve been somewhat studying the Buck 110, specifically interested in ones potentially made in 1975 and trying to locate and identify them on eBay, etc. It’s my understanding that in about that 1975 area the 110 should have either three inlay pins or four pins, all of which are the small diameter pins. I’m I interpreting that correctly? Then they go to larger diameter pins in about 1977?

It seems fairly difficult to find a two dot four pin knife. Are they a little more rare in terms of quantity made?

The 5 pin 110 is a transitional knife when Buck was going from the two scale pins to 3 scale pins. Using up supplies on hand the two pin scales were drilled to add the new pin placement resulting in the 5 pin variation, more accurately it’s 4 scale pins and the rocker pin. Not sure how accurate the information is but saw one thread that estimated a bit over 1000 5 pin variation 110’s made. I have one in my collection and another in my sale case. Have to dig em out and check the tang stamp. Thinking there would be only one tang stamp for that variant. PM me if you’re interested in buying the one I have in my selling case.

Great info there, thank you. All of that makes good sense. I will send you a PM to discuss where my head’s at, thank you.
