Hello guys, Ive been, I Think ive been quite lucky lately (you tell me) in that i have come across a very nice large collection of case knives. Just wondering just how rare it is to find absolutely new from 1905-1970. Not just new condition but unused, unsharpened never carried and uncleaned, yes really, uncleaned! i have not seen any like these for sale anywhere. got a couple of coke bottles (center swell) from 1920-40 and i havnt seen used ones on e-bay dated that early? Thing is there are no boxes so I'm guessing they were housed in some nice cases. all the bolsters were slightly dull so just a touch with the micro fiber towel and bam! man had passed and left over 3 hundred knives and not a one was used that ive seen so far. Still not finished with them yet. OK, just got pics of about a 3rd of them so far. BUT, BACK TO ORIGINAL QUESTION... HOW UNCOMMON TO FIND NEW KNIVES FROM 1920-1970? RED

for now several, what they are calling swell end jacks? like the one little one in the middle of those 16 knives and a couple beautiful redbone coke bottles. without a bump or a bruise! (no pics yet) theres more coming. im trying to tread lightly for certain reasons.

Knives such as you’ve described do in fact exist. Sometimes they turn up in pictures here on AAPK. They are not often seen, because most of them are already in someone’s collection. Not being circulated in common sales venues (like eBay for one example). When they do surface for sale they're typically expensive, which is also why they are frequently counterfeited. So, when you do see one available for purchase, proceed with caution, especially if you see one that appears shiny and unused.

At first look I see nothing alarming about any of the knives in your pictures. You’ve probably got some gems. BUT your pictures as provided are not sufficient to determine their authenticity with certainty. Group pictures of multiple knives doesn’t allow for thorough analysis of any individual knife. For evaluation you need to provide close up, clear in-focus pictures of each knife and its stamps individually, from several angles.

you know, good thing is that if the guy could make fakes like this, they would probably be worth more than the real thing! kinda like when an artist dies and the price of his work goes through the roof! Thing is, i will unfortunately have to sell some of these just so i can afford to keep some favorites, then i can see what the bidder/new owner thinks of them?

I don't think Ken was implying that the guy who owned the collection you obtained counterfeited any of those knives. However, I believe what Ken was sayin is; the guy COULD have collected some counterfeited knives over time and you MAY have some in your obtained collection. That is the warning Ken was providing to you, and others. Just my take on his post. I may be way off base and over thinking it.

Personally, I believe you have a really nice collection. Good luck with your endeavor.

Precisely. My intent was to answer the OP’s question, do such knives exist? Yes they do. The OP says he never sees any. That’s because most of them are already in someone’s collection, and not for sale. Occasionally a collection may become available for sale and it may have some unused, spotless old knives in it. The knife collecting hobby began to gain popularity in the late 1960s. That is when collectors began buying up those old spotless knives. Back then you could sometimes still find Tested XX knives NOS in retailer’s stock. If you did, you bought them and put them in your collection, or re-sold them to someone else who did. (I personally found and bought some of them at that time).

The other point I tried to make (not specific to OP) is that collections may have some counterfeits in them. A general warning for anyone: Ask yourself, “Who buys all the fakes that sell for exorbitant prices”? The answer is, sometimes collectors unwittingly do. Contrary to what some sellers expect buyers to believe, just because a knife came from “a longtime collector” isn’t in itself evidence of authenticity. Each knife needs to be evaluated on its own merits. I encourage anyone interested in collecting old pre-1970 knives. Just do your homework beforehand!

As stated, from the pictures provided I see no evidence any of the OP knives are fakes. However those pictures are also not sufficient enough to conclusively evaluate them. Maybe later we’ll get to see some individual close-ups.

I'd say you were extremely lucky. That is a remarkable collection. It would be difficult to decide which ones to let go.

Depending on how many you are going to sell and what your
tolerance is, it could be overwhelming work You
might want to consider selling some in groups of
2 or 3.
