Newest Case Pick-Ups

The W.R. Case & Sons Cutlery Company has a very rich history that began in 1889 when William Russell (“W.R.”), Jean, John, and Andrew Case began fashioning their knives and selling them along a wagon trail in upstate New York. The company has produced countless treasures and it continues to do so as one of the most collected brands in the world.

You’re welcome Redrider, love this jigging. They have it with brown snake skin jigged bone as well. Doesn’t quite have the same appeal as the red.

I hear ya Ken.

Is that Mammoth Ivory? Is it factory original? (looks like it might be a BIGHEAD mod...he loves sows and mammoth)

It is Mammoth Ivory! It is factory original and a sticker on the box indicated that’s what it is. There were no additional stampings on the blade to indicate what the pattern of handle material are. I’m really impressed that you noticed that because I didn’t even know Mammoth Ivory was ever used for Case handles. Looks like the knife is only about 20 years old but who knows how long ago the Mammoth it came from roamed the earth.

An interesting knife for sure. ::tu::
Does the main clip not have a dated stamp?

The style of the SELECT tang stamp indicates date of manufacture to be 2002-2004

Is there a pattern number on the box label? I don't know if box labels for the Case Select line had pattern numbers, but if so, I would expect it might show something like IV539. The IV would stand for "Ivory" (obviously), 5 for five blades, and 39 is the Case pattern number for a sowbelly.

From the AAPK Research section:

Case Sowbelly Stockman Knife Case's first knife pattern that had the number 39 is a 3 3/4" knife that is known as a sowbelly. They quit producing them prior to 1940, but reintroduced them as a 3 7/8" knife in 2002. The newer knives have the same unique design where the handle curves in a u shape. Both versions generally have three blades; a clip master blade along with a sheepfoot blade and a spey blade. Some have five blades; a clip master blade, along with a sheepfoot, a spey, a short clip, and a pen blade. In the past, Case has manufactured a 039 pattern as well. They are 3 7/16" knives that differ ever so slightly in shape, and blade design.

From personal experience I know that Case used Mammoth Ivory for knife handles at least as early as 1985 as seen on this Mini Trapper IV207 (which now resides in the collection of knifeaddict1965)

Thanks for the explanation, Q. ::handshake::
What does Select indicate compared to others dotted Case knives of the same period?

Thanks again, Q, for that great addition to my collection. Nice knife Bradfordguy... Case did make this Select 5 blade Mammoth Ivory Sowbelly (TB39 I539 SS) in 2004. Below is a link to one that sold here on AAPK a while back.
