Old Remington is this common

[*]tang stamp dates it from 1933 -35. How rare or common is the item. How to restore it without damaging it. Any type of advice is appreciated

Probably going to need pictures (maybe a DETAILED description) but Remington was probably the largest pocket knife manufacturer in the U.S. in the 1930's so they aren't super rare, the more so since Remington quality has assured that there are many survivors. That doesn't mean that they can't be quite valuable.

As stated above, Remington cranked out a ton of knives in the 1930's, that was their knife hay-day. But they are gorgeous.

Your knife should have a pattern number stamped on it. You can input that pattern number into the search function and probably find posts with info and pictures of the pattern. Search is found under Quicklinks, on the upper left (on a phone it’s the little three-line “hamburger” icon).

Remington’s cutlery factory and inventory was sold to Pal Cutlery (which was known for razors) in 1939. Pal later ceased making pocket cutlery. In the early 1980s the owners of the Remington trade name commissioned some authentic reproductions to be made by Camillus. Those authorized reproductions if in good condition have some value, and are collected by some.

Sorry if it disappoints you, but the pictured knife is not one made by Remington nor is it one of the authentic reproductions. Some would call it a modern “reproduction”, but reproduction of what? Doesn’t appear to be a copy of any old original pre-1939 Remington knife. Looks old because of misuse, not because it actually is old. It has very low actual value aside from being a user. You could clean it up using info from the link I provided above. One like it, in near-new condition sold on eBay recently for $26 https://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_nkw=re ... &LH_Sold=1

No it’s not a counterfeit. It was made for Remington, by a cutlery they contracted with to make it. If you’ll look on eBay for “Remington stockman green Delrin knife” you’ll find more like it for sale. The link I provided above shows knives like yours that have recently been sold on eBay.

In summary, your knife is not old, not uncommon, and not high value. If you like it you can buy one like it in better condition on eBay, or possibly even get a new one from a retailer that sells Remington brand knives.

It is absolutely a legitimate Remington, in that it was made under contract for the Remington company. They simply had the knives made for them, rather than making the knives themselves. Bear & Son cutlery is another company that made a lot of knives for Remington.
Most now are made under contract overseas, and imported in. I avoid those, but any marked "USA" are good knives, even if they are not always collectible.
