I assume since you posted in the Böker forum, it’s a Boker? (I can’t read any tang stamp markings from the picture). From the condition of the blades it appears your grandfather used it a lot. It has jigged Delrin covers. Delrin was not used for knife covers prior to early 1960s, so the knife was made after that. I do not know when Böker first started using it. Sorry I can’t tell you more but it’s nice to have a knife that belonged to a family member - a keepsake to be treasured! ::tu::

A little 3-in-1 or other lightweight oil on a soft cloth, rubbed on the handle covers will remove the “white” color from the bottom of the jigging divots and restore it to its original look. Put a drop or two in each of the blade joints while you’re at it.

it was very common for the round shield on these knives to go AWOL so to me that s part of the story is a beautiful family heirloom. Congratulations ::groove::

That is a very important family heirloom to you. As suggested, oil the joints. Clean any accumulation of pocket debris from the blade well with a wooden toothpick. Resist any urges to do any heavy cleaning, restoration, or buffing of the blades. The way it is now is how your ancestor carried it.

Great call identifying it as a likely Boker 8573. The jigging and shield shape definitely line up, and if those covers are bone like you think, it could be an older variant or a transitional model. Either way, you’ve got a real piece of personal and collectible history there. A little careful cleaning and oiling, as suggested, will help preserve it while keeping the original feel intact.

You have the knife in-hand so you’re in the best position to tell. I said Delrin because of the whitish color in the bottom of the jigging divots. Knife collectors sometimes call it “Delrin haze”. I’ve not seen it on bone.

Bone has Haversian canals, little dark spots where the nerves and capillaries were. You can usually see them if you know what to look for, but they show up best with even slight magnification. Delrin of course does not have them. Here’s a link to a post explaining how to tell for sure https://www.allaboutpocketknives.com/kn ... hp?t=62145.

That knife is perfect and if maintained, it can go to the next generation too.

Yep. The patina, wear, and story make it perfect. One can't get that with a new knife without years of carry and use.
