Hello all! I've stumbled into these forums many times while looking up info on some old knives in my collection or knives I was considering or just interested to learn about. I just noticed today that the forums are still active. So here I am. I used to own a reptile forum attached to my snake hook business. I put myself through Nursing School turning old golf clubs into snake handling equipment. My site with about 6,500 members started slowing down when FB came along and when I actually became a nurse, I didn't have time for my hook business or my slowing forums. So I shut it down. I love this format. I realize a lot ...well ALL of what drew me in here were some very old threads with some really knowledgeable people and some really nice examples. I do hope the old guard is still hanging around here. I too have a few nice examples to share, in time. Right now, I think I'll spend a little time exploring. Looking forward to making some new friends!

I've got a couple of brothers-in- law up there in them north Georgia mountains. Mighty nice up there but a little too hilly for somebody used to the Florida Panhandle flat woods.
Dive in and enjoy the forum!

Hello back at ya, and welcome, from the mountains of North Alabama!
I went camping up in the N Alabama Mtns a few years back in Sloppy Floyd State Park. I had a little run-in with the Park Ranger... Noooo not like that. Not all run=ins are bad. On the way up, I stopped at our local butcher shop and had 4 Rib-eyes cut about 1 1/2 inch thick. I brought the grill insert out nof an old round charcoal grill and a pretty good stack of well seasoned white oak firewood. If you've never cooked steaks over oak coals before, I highly recomend. It's life changing. The girls took one look at the steaks and said, "Oh HELL no!" There were four of us (two couples) So I brought 4 steaks, 4 big baking potatoes ....Anyway, the girls cut a steak AND a potato in half and threw of the entire balance.

The fire died down, the coals were just right, The grill fit perfectly on the riing of campfire rocks. The foil wrapped potatoes had been in the coals about long enough. I had just flipped the steaks when the Ranger stopped by. He asked if we had any liquor. I told him no but I did see a liquor store on the way in. He seemed to have a good sense of humor. He told us we were the only campers there. He seemed bored and was kind of lingering, so I asked if he'd had dinner. One of the girls told him if he didn't eat it, we'd have to throw it away or risk a bear incident. These steaks were some fancy Japanese cut that kind of looked like a cross between rib-eye and prime-rib. I forget the name. He said he gets offered food all the time and always says no...but DAMN that smells good! So we ate and talked till about 11 or 12. I never was able to sneak the beer out of the truck. By the time he left, we were all ready to crash. Sloppy Floyd is a beautiful park.

Thanks for all the warm welcomes. My knife collection may be a little boring. I started collecting Case xx in 1975. So it's a lot of those and a few war type knives and bayonets. I've recently discovered 'FLIPPERS"...tHEY KIND OF MAKE ME WISH FIDGET SPINNERS WERE A THING WHEN i WAS GROWING UP.

Great story!
I had to look up that park. Turns out it is in Georgia, but very close to the Alabama line. I am not too far away from it, but had not heard of it before!

When I was renting a single family home with 4 bedrooms, I had sub-renters, a big backyard, concrete patio and maple trees. We would grill using dead maple wood and the taste was amazing. It's the only thing I miss from the group house.

Hmm All these years, I thought...Well, we for sure spent that weekend enjoing the Alabama Mtns. I seem to always straddle state lines. I live in a tri-state area now. I'm barely nin Georgia, 20 minutes from Tennessee and 20 minutes from North Carolina. Half the time running these back roads, there's no telling where you'll end up. I remember on that camping trip, the friends we were with, one was frm Mentone Alabama and the other was from Menlo Georgia. Those two towns are way too close together to be named so similarly. Yeah, I just asked Alexa. Turns out we were in Summerville. My sister lives in Rome. I guess I know where Floyd County got nits name from now. I never made that connection.

Ever cooked on cherry wood? You can buy it now in chips or pellets. If you can ever get ahold of some logs though. Back in the 80s, lightning hit my father in law's cherry tree. "Oh, so sorry to hear that, Bob. I'll be right over there with a chainsaw to clean that mess up." THE BEST BBQ, I've ever had! I had to wait a year for it to dry out though. I think I know why George Washington chopped down that tree. Before the historians pipe in, I know. I know, fake story. But if he did, I don't blame him.
