Spalding, I found your knife.

The Remington Corporation and the knives that they built have influenced the U.S. cutlery industry more than nearly any other manufacturer. From the time America was settled, to the end of WWI, American knife companies struggled to compete with Britain and German imports, but events that occurred during and after the First World War led to a great change in this phenomenon. Unprecedented opportunities arose, and Remington stepped up to seize the moment. In the process, they created some of today's most prized collectables. In an ironic twist, the next World War played the greatest role in ending the company’s domination of the industry.

Spalding, I found your knife.

Post by Bradfordguy »

Hey everyone,

I found this old scout-style knife recently, and it was immediately recognizable as a Remington — jigged bone handles, classic shield, full toolset, and solid build. But what caught my eye was something etched into the main blade: “Spalding Bro”

I’m not familiar with that name other than a Caddyshack reference. Not something I expected to see on a Remington knife.

Postingi some photos below. Curious if anyone knows what this might be or has seen another like it.

Thanks,
Joe

A.G. Spalding + Bros

Sporting goods of all types sold in their catalog.

Opened a sporting goods store in 1876, the same year they developed the first official major league baseball.

Very nice knife!

From ChatGPT:

A.G. Spalding & Bros., best known as a sporting goods manufacturer, had a notable role in early 20th-century American youth and sports culture including some affiliation with the Boy Scouts of America (BSA). While not an official partner in the modern corporate sense, Spalding produced and sold gear and goods that were marketed for or used by Boy Scouts, especially during the 1910s through the 1930s.

Here are 2 relevant points:
  • As a Licensed or Approved Supplier Spalding was among the early commercial companies that produced BSA-approved or recommended products, such as knives, compasses, camping gear, and uniforms. In some cases, these items were co-branded or labeled specifically for scout use.
  • Boy Scout Knife by Remington were sold through retailers like A.G. Spalding & Bros., which had stores and catalogs offering a wide range of outdoor goods. If your knife has both “Boy Scouts of America” and “A.G. Spalding Bros” on it, it likely means it was a Remington knife retailed or branded by Spalding, potentially for scout use or general outdoor sportsmen.
