POS Knives

Post by OLDE CUTLER »

I got these two from Thomasg in the POS exchange last week. He sent a note along with them fully informing me as to their shady past. The first one is stamped New York Knife and looks really good until it is examined more closely. One can see that the blades are in much better shape than the rest of the knife. There are still grind marks on the swedges, the shoulders do not line up, and if you look at the springs of the knife, considerable rust pitting is visible both inside and out. The tang stamp of course is not genuine either. Overall length is 4 and 1/2".

The second one is a Western whittler. Obviously has been buffed to death, with a lot of pitting on the blades near the pivot where it could not be buffed. Also I dont think a pen blade is correct for this knife also, maybe it should be a cope? Overall length is 3 and 7/8".

However much these two are not genuine, I still plan on carrying and using them. They will have full disclosure tags on them in my notebook.

I think to denote it as a fake, I am going to drill a hole right thru that New York Knife tang stamp.

As much as people hate fakes, myself included (though I’m usually not smart enough to tell), I think that New York Knife Co. one is great looking.

A prime example of everything that glitters is not gold . The bone , shield and knife frame may be from the same time period as a New York knife co knife ? .Also the SWEDGE is not as well defined , and I think nail pull should be long when the O.P. was compared to the only other New York jack knife I have .I guess the O.P..knife is a good example to learn from .
Main blade from N.Y. Harness jack .

Well the deed is done. I drilled a 3/32" hole right thru the NY knife tang stamp. The tang is soft as butter, did not even have to use my carbide bit.
Another thing I saw and should have pictured is that the master blade is on its own spring, but has a brass catchbit alongside it. I don't think I have ever seen that.

I knew that when sending the knife to you in the P.O.S. Box you would do the right thing with it and it would not be back on flea bay in a week . Looks like who ever re bladed the knife use substandard materials if it drilled so easily . If I do happen to buy another counterfeit knife I will use your drilling technique to make sure it is easy to identify.

I have that knife in the OP all apart and trying to decide what to do with it. As discussed above, it is 4 and 1/2 inches long, has a solid frame and really nice bone and shield. I am thinking of making a custom with a new blade to replace the counterfeit NY Knife spear blade. Possibilities include a clip, Wharncliffe, or cleaver blade. The pen blade is fully hardened, so I will reuse and include it in the new layout. Posterboard "blades" to show approximate look. Watcha think?

Of the three I like the clip point, but I favor spear point on an old knife.

Normally I prefer a Clip or Spear, but I am really drawn to the look of that Cleaver blade, OC. I do not think that I have ever seen anything like it on a pocket knife.
It is almost a Cotton Sampler blade, but not, and that hole definitely makes it look like a miniature meat cleaver...
I guess it is the unique idea that appeals to me, but the Cleaver blade definitely has my vote!

It's already a "project knife" go full tilt and put a cleaver blade on it, just to be clever. First one I've seen on a knife like this lol

I'd like to see how it turned out. The scales are super nice.

I think if you are going to this length to use the parts, go with the crazy cleaver/cotton sampler blade! Hope to see the final results either way.
