L.L.H. Co Cleveland Elephant Toenail knife (1898-1911)

Post by raincrowe »

I was in Northern Ohio over the weekend; and I have a knife from that area.....A two-bladed; four inch closed beautful green bone handles
Both blades are stamped but the larger one is not very legible stamp... (L.L.H. Co. Cleveland)
Goins book pg. 168 says that ... Lockwood Luetkemeyer Henry Co.was located in Cleveland...in 1911 they bought the McIntosh Hardware Company
I couldn't find but very little information on this knife Just wondering if another knife company like say Case or some other cutlery was contracted
to make these knives ::tu:: Anyting would be helpful??
Thanks in Advance:

Great knife! I'd call that pickbone rather than greenbone.

Awesome knife, congratulations! Did Case use match-striker pulls? ::shrug::
Pocket, fixed, machete, axe, it's all good!

I would to thank everyone for the good info. and kind remarks!
It is good to learn that Utica Cutlery made the knife...they were established in...1910
I was told years ago when I purchased the knife that was made in 1911
One thing I learned the difference between a sunfish vs elephant patterns
Elephant toenail size is equal...Sunfish one side is larger than the other (truth or fiction)?

Raincrowe:
I've never heard of one side being a different size than the other, but I'm a small time player.
My understanding is that Elephant Toe and Sunfish are one and the same.
If I had my druthers we would all call it a rope knife. ::nod::

I would think one side larger than the other would be a sleeveboard? ::shrug::

So we're talking about large and small bolsters.

I've always thought the sunfish and the elephant toenail were same knife
Another older knife trader was telling that the toenail has equal end bolsters
The sunfish has a slightly smaller bolster on one end
I don't know if that's true; and that's why I asked the true or false question??
I assumed that the knife was called Elephant Toenail by the earlier knife traders
and the later ones called the knife a Sunfish ::tu::
What do you think??

Case called their newer releases Snowshoes, not sure if they did way back when.

3 make matchstrike toes,Utica ,Phoenix and Krusius Brothers. Phoenix is longer and finer serrations. Utica and KB are very similar, but KB's are usually stamped on the right of center of the tang. ::tu::
