Don Morrow Trapper

Post by kamagong »

A while back I ordered a knife for my birthday. I asked Don Morrow for a 4" single blade trapper without filework. It arrived yesterday.

This beauty is what I got.

CPM154 blade with amber stag bone scales. Dovetailed bolsters. The acorn shield was engraved by Don's lovely wife.

It's a big knife at 4 3/4" closed. The blade by itself is already 4". Here's a tip, when commissioning a custom slip joint make sure that everything is clear and understood. I asked for a 4" knife, thinking that I would get something in a nice, pocketable package. I always assumed that when a knife is described as being 4" long, that meant 4" closed. You know what they say about assumptions right? It seems that there is another way to understand a request for a 4" knife, and that is you want a knife with a 4" blade. Doh!

Fortunately it all worked out. While the size of this trapper precludes it from becoming an every day carry, I'm still keeping it. I have enough knives that are 3.5-4" in size, this one'll introduce a little variety into my lineup. And it should make a nice picnic or fruit knife, replacing the Laguiole that my wife claimed as her own.

I don't think I would send it back, either. It's a gorgeous knife. Completely clean and utilitarian. I like to see them done up fancy just as much as anyone, but I also like to see them made just for business, like this one.
