I am not familiar enough with those different trappers to understand how it is different from a 285UH? Is the frame a different size, or...?

If you look at the frame directly above the shield, the 285UH has a slight serpentine curved shape.
The 96ot has 2 separate u shaped curves that come to a point right above the shield.

And I think that the 96 frame is bigger as well?

Yes it is slightly larger, maybe 1/4 inch. You can see the extra length on the butt end bolster.
