Verifying I'm human???

If you can think of something to talk about that is not related to knives, discuss it here.

Hey, if it keeps the scammed and riff-raff out, I'm okay with it. Takes less than 5 seconds.

Since late last week, yes. And I think the website was down Friday morning.

There's a hole in the screen. Walking on the keyboard my tom cat changed topics while I refilled my coffee. Lucky Tom was verified to be human.

Some of y’all must have forgotten when this “verifying you are human” episode first happened a few months ago. Here’s the reply explanation from Bryan at that time https://www.allaboutpocketknives.com/kn ... 5#p1207805

If that few seconds is what it takes to protect us from hackers I’m all for it.

I didn't forget about the first time this started happening and I admit that I don't know the first thing about cyber security for a web site like AAPK, but what's confusing to me, and maybe to some others here as well, is why this verification thing happened a few months ago and then it stopped doing it for a time and now it's back to doing it again :? I guess I thought it was a temporary thing that was "fixed" and that's why everything went back to normal. I wonder why no other web sites I visit do this verification ::shrug::

It is getting to be more common on websites because the hackers never give up. Haven't you ever seen the ones where you have to pick out school busses or something from a picture. Hackers now use the most advanced AI, so protections have to keep up.

Not for some time now...but maybe that's because I am seeing more two-step authentication using a pass key or facial recognition instead. I read that AI was learning how to thwart the picture identification just like it learned how to identify the "wavy" distorted letters and numbers "captcha" that was commonly used prior to that.

The implication I took from Bryan’s post is that it depends on who/how many hacking attempts are being made. If the site is being bombarded with hacker attempts, or there are persistent repeated attempts from one (or a few) particular sources, the “verifying you are human” screening kicks in. I’m no expert so could be reading something in it that’s not there. ::shrug:: Regardless the reason, if it helps I’m not in such a big hurry that I can’t wait a few seconds.

Cloudflare uses Adaptive DDoS Protection and regulates how protective to be based on recent threats and activity. We walk the Earth with other humans whose morals and ethics allow them to steal and cheat from others for a living. Tools like Cloudflare give us a weapon to do battle against those people. I’d rather be armed with a tool and experience an inconvenience than suffer what could be a catastrophic attack to AAPK.

Distributed denial of service is when your server gets pinged a million times a second by program or malware instead of a human user. It overwhelms the servers capacity and causes things to crash. Bad actors can then ransom your website. Pay this or you lose everything.

There must be increased attacks of this type at this time for other sites that cloudfare services.

Imagine if these people had real jobs and put their time and talents to use instead of thieving.

It's sad but seems to be a fact of life that wherever something good exists, there will also be malicious evildoers seeking to exploit it for their own greed. Fortunately, there are people (humans) who are just as dedicated to stopping the cyber baddies and keeping the interweb safe and working for us innocent naive denizens.
