Are There Any BASEBALL Fans On The Forum?

If you can think of something to talk about that is not related to knives, discuss it here.

That is funny.

That would be a strike with C.B. Bucknor behind the plate.

Yes, I saw that Bucknor had 6 calls challenged and overturned by the ABS system, before having to leave the game after being hit by a foul ball. Wasn’t even a full game’s work. I guess someone had to take over for Angel Hernandez. ::sotb:: At least now there is some process for reckoning.

The Rangers game with Baltimore ended yesterday on an overturned ABS call. Orioles ahead with two outs in the 9th. With two strikes on the batter (Carter) the next pitch was called a ball. But Baltimore had two remaining ABS challenges, so the catcher decided to use one of them. ABS replay showed the pitch was strike three - game over!

If they’re not going full ABS, then they shouldn't embarrass bad umpires by putting them behind the plate . The Reds wore him out too.

I'm a fan of the challenge, I'd rather have all ABS.

Went to opening day game with our son. Beautiful day for baseball but there was forecast for possible rain showers so they kept the roof closed. ::uc:: Good game, was tied going into 9th, but Rangers lost in 9th inning. I’m sure Reds fans were happy. ::disgust::

Any Bucs fans out there? After years of developing young talent and losing/trading them to the big market teams with deep pockets, Konor Griffin may be an exception. It looks as if the Pirates are going to lock him up for a number of years.

They have some pitching talent also. Steel city does have some hope. I credit Skenes for a lot of this.

Your team has some pitching talent also, they sure ruined the Rangers' weekend. Maybe Rhett Lowder will finally be breaking thru after a couple years of bad luck and injuries, a part of it is probably a collective case of cold bats on the Ranger part tho.

Ken, great that you saw opening day pageantry with your son even tho it was a loss. I have only been to one opening day, back in 1975. It was a rainy, cool day and I saw Bob Gibson make his final opening day start. He had a bad game, but the whole day was a memorable one.

I can't believe the Brewers, it becomes legendary, they seem to make all stars from outcasts.
I used to be a fan, but now I might despise them.😊

They always manage to stay somewhat competitive and get the most out of their roster. I will save my feelings of despise though for big market teams who buy, rather than develop their rosters.

The more games I watch, the more I am starting to dislike ABS. If you go back in this thread, I was for it, but I am now beginning to think that they have opened Pandora's Box.

So far I have not seen any negatives to ABS. I’ve watched 10 or 12 games on television and two in person. I have seen several close calls overturned and several upheld. The Rangers lost a walk-off strikeout on a pitch originally called a ball, which was challenged by the Oriole’s catcher, and overturned to strike three - game over. The ABS replay showed it was in fact a strike. In no case did an ABS challenge delay the game more than 15-20 seconds. And I’ve also seen pitches called either strikes or balls, respectively, that appeared otherwise to me but went unchallenged (saved the challenge to a more strategic time in the game, or the batter wasn’t one who was given authority by his team to challenge) ::shrug::

So far I haven’t seen any cases of selfish challenges by players as some predicted would happen. I have seen a few late game (last inning) desperation wishful thinking “We’ve got nothing to lose so why not” challenges. ::shrug::

I think it has highlighted that the previously perceived strike zone is greater than 17.5 inches. A few of those pitches just barely touched the edge of the zone but by rule they were strikes before, and after ABS.

I'm still for it, our catcher doesn't challenge enough I think. The timing seems to dictate the challenge almost as much as where the ball is !

I have no good arguments against it, it's just that the more I watch, the more I miss baseball as it was played for the last 150 years. I don't like bad umpiring, but bad calls even out. I miss the arguments, rather than things being settled by video replay. I am old school though, I have hated all the new rules ushered in by Rob Manfred. For that matter, I am still against the DH, and get rid of all these stupid mascots dancin' around annoying true fans. 8)

What would Ty Cobb say about players wearing these stupid sliding mitts?

I like consistency. So if a particular ump is calling low/inside or high/outside the same for each batter, I don't have a problem with it. I do dislike anything that slows the game, especially when a pitcher is in the zone and dealing.

It's not fair to all. Players shouldn't be subjected to the umpires whims and they are not the same consistently.
I used to be against it, but I want all hitters to get the same treatment day in and day out.
It's not an imposition to anyone, just takes seconds.

It's a shame for a player with a good eye and discipline to be at the whim of an inconsistent umpire.

Do you feel good about that pitching staff? I like Brady House and Lile and a couple of the other young hitters, but I would feel uneasy every time one of those starters takes the mound.

The Brewers have 9 players on IL.
