Prices on new knives?!

So, Is anybody else baffled or just pissed at what these fools are asking for the Peanut butter and jelly case knives!!! They look cool but , its just a color, its not costing case anymore to make the things! I would hate to see what a burnt PB&J Cheetah would run! RED

The price being paid when SMKW has a drop is bearable. I assume you’re talking about the scalpers who buy them just to re-sell at a much higher price. This is happening all over the place. I don’t do Facebook, but I hear tales of the ridiculous prices people are paying for knives - many, it seems, don’t realize they can get the same knife from an online dealer for much less. I suppose we have to consider it free enterprise for someone to buy a knife and sell it at a higher price. To me, the problem is with the people who are paying these ridiculous prices, not the seller. They are the ones driving up the prices.

I completely get it and it is fairly baffling. Overall, I have always preferred vintage pocket knives but the last 2 or so years has really made me completely ignore certain brands for new knife releases. Namely Case and GEC. Seeing what they go for new much less on the secondary market is nuts.

As much as I love GEC knives, the market for these knives is something that I choose not to keep up with and buy any longer. Nothing against those who do as GEC makes a fantastic knife and I love the GEC's that I do have. The secondary market and price gouging completely ruined it for me. There are probably a large amount of GEC knives that are purchased new(which buying one released on a website is very difficult) and are immediately posted for sale by the buyer for a crazy amount. On the flipside of that, people still pay these prices so it is what it is, I get it. It is their money to spend and my issue with it has nothing to do with how they choose to spend their money. The same goes for any release that Case does in whatever new color etc...PB&J for example.

So I am happy to stick with those vintage.

Surely you can get beyond that.

Blaming the manufacturer for secondary market prices is no different than kicking the dog because you’re mad at your wife.

I have always had my main knife interest in older pre-1970 knives that were made to be used. I don't begrudge anyone for their preferences but I like the old knives. The quality of these knives is infrequently equaled in the knives manufactured today. I know there are some great, currently manufactured knives out there but I would much rather spend my money on an old knife that was made to be used than to spend the same dollars on a newly made knife that is made to be collected. Before seeing this post I unaware of any Case PB&J knives but seeing the prices for secondary sales on eBay you can count me out for sure. $200 and up for a brand spanking new Case PB&J???

The old knives have stood the test of time in the collectors market and I can't really say the same for a newly made knife. These things do change and time will tell.

As long as "Knife Knuts" continue buying knives at ridiculous MSRP and/or secondary pricing, the situation will not change. Let the manufacturers, and/or scalpers sit on a few hundred knives for 6 to 8 months without a sale, and the situation may get better.

Thing is, price should be based on rarity and not color scheme but without knowing the amount of each particular knife color produced, just seems crazy, but maybe knives are going to start being like baseball cards. high dollar when the rookie is released then not worth squat as time passes? But to old collectors like many of us, its better to buy the vintage knives when we can pick them up cheaper than the fancy colored new puppies! Not sure why im bitchin since i aint gonna pay for them anyway. RED

Knife collecting has somewhat lost it's way......what about frame pattern, blades steels, heat treating process, tolerances and action vs. the color of the covers.....I like my PB&J between 2 slices of good old Wonder Bread not in my pocket, YMMV

I agree wholeheartedly.
However, it seems that when a maker comes up with a new handle scale color/material, they slap it on several patterns creating a "series". My feeling is they hope collectors will buy the whole series and not just the patterns they normally collect.
A way to sell low interest patterns?
A way to make a simple, inexpensive pattern more expensive?
I really don't know and it is a game I'm not interested in playing.

ditto Bill …. I’m surprised that nobody has jumped on any Case knife made in the year 2020 as a collecting strategy since this is one of their lowest if not the lowest production number year due to Covid. If a PB&J happens to fit that criteria, ok, I get it. But to collect modern knives based solely on the color the bone was dyed seems kinda silly to this old time collector.
