THE INVESTMENTS OF A FATHER

Life is but a whisper,
A vapor in the wind.
Before it's hardly started,
It's almost to the end.

Our time here has a limit,
An expiration date.
We must make the most of it,
Before it gets too late.

God has given each some seeds,
That we must then invest.
We nurture that investment
Through trouble and through stress.

In midlife as our crop grows,
There often comes a storm.
We shouldn't be surprised at all,
This really is the norm.

The winds will blow, the rains will fall
there is Thunder all around.
But the seeds we have invested,
Root deeper in the ground.

When the storm is finally over,
And the sunshine has returned,
We see the plants have all survived,
We needn’t have been concerned.

But concerned we are as we watch,
Our crop of children grow,
We want to see them blossom,
Before we have to go.

Our time on earth is limited,
We must soon be on our way.
We nurture and love our crop,
Before we go away.

Then comes the time for our harvest,
When we ourselves are in the count,
Who has invested in our lives,
We are tallied to whose account?

For there were those who planted us,
And tended us along the way,
We were their investment,
How well did we pay?

Those who invested in us,
Have watched us all these years,
Sometimes in joy and happiness,
And sometimes with bitter tears.

I thank those who have invested
In this life I hold so dear,
Who poured love and teaching into my life
And helped me overcome my fear.

They were the ones who believed in me,
Though I often had my doubts.
But they were there to water me,
In times of spiritual drought.

Parents, pastors, teachers,
neighbors, relatives and friends,
I am their investment,
Where their talents they did spend.

Was I a good investment?
Did I bring a good return?
Salvation, truth and justice,
Were these the lessons that I learned?

God too made an investment,
In this life of mine,
It cost the death of His dear Son,
What agony divine!

Was I a good investment Lord,
What dividend did I pay?
Forgive me when I got sidetracked,
And didn't stop to pray.

“You were a good investment child,”
I hear the Father say,
“Come home, come near and enter in,
For this is where you stay!”

“I know your life was troubled,
As you struggled with the beast,
I invite you now to joyfulness,
And everlasting peace.

Dale my friend, there's a lot meat to in each verse of your poem! Lots of food for thought.
