Absolutely love the coal trains
You know there is a lot of fuel in them. Power plants. Not sure if they use it in the steel mills anymore.

Granite City steel still uses coal, I see Norfolk Southern trains going in and out of there when I am up that way. I will get a picture sometime, there is a lot of NS action around Granite City.

I thought all the coal I use to see going east was for the power plants. I didn’t think there was much steel in and around Gary Indiana. That goes back to when David was in scouts. Pre Obama.

Steve, I am through that area 2 or 3 times a year and it may not be as gritty as it once was, but coal is still in use.

I've unloaded many a rail car of the dusty, dirty, nasty old stuff. We got the bottom hopper cars. Took a sledge knock the lock loose and let her go, most times we had to lower a Shaker down on the car to get it empty. Talk about a noisy apparatus, we could only unload till 10 p.m. on the 4 to12 shift and from 6 am till 8 on the graveyard shift.There used to be some videos on YouTube of similar operations.

At Western Maryland Station in Cumberland currently. The Chesapeake and Ohio Canal, which runs from Cumberland to Georgetown starts here too.
