A few centerfires are damaged by a lot of dry snapping without a snap cap but most are not. Many, maybe most, rimfires get a dimple peened into the chamber recess where the rim seats if they're dry fired a lot. Fortunately, the small yellow plastic dry wall anchors that are usually sold in packs of 100 make great .22LR snap caps. They do not last forever but at pennies apiece who cares. Working the bolt or slide manually so far they've fed through all my guns.

In the big guns an unexpected snap cap reveals a beginner's or your own flinching. Even in .22LRs they'll show a twitch instead of good follow through. Not knowing which revolver chamber will come up with no live cartridge is great practice.

Back in the mid 1990’s, I purchased a NON-FIRING,
NO MOVING PARTS, German, 9MM, P.38, replica WW2 handgun.
It was used as a movie prop and also as a theater prop.
It is a VERY accurate looking, NON-FIRING, NO MOVING PARTS replica.

The P-38 in your 2nd and 4th pictures appears to have bakalite grips, finish rubbed off the top of the right side of its trigger from rotating and rust on its left side which is more likely on an older all steel gun. The flat black grips on the other P-38 look like a newer synthetic and its front sight is too short.

I never owned a steel frame P-38, only a P-1 and a .22LR. In 1977 I bought a new .22 P-38. It was a blow back that did not have the machining in its frame for the center fire's locking piece. It's been a long time but maybe you would have had a hard time telling it was not a center fire from side pictures. While it was a very expensive plinking pistol over the next year or two the number of US dollars it took to buy a German mark doubled doubling its MSRP so I got my money back.
