1961 Gibson "Dove"

Post by Ridgegrass »

Went to a nice jam yesterday. Guy brought an old Dove with an interesting story. Doves hit the market in '62, 2 years after the Hummingbird. However, by serial number, this one was made in late 1961. So, it was probably made to get ready for the 1962 introduction making it a very early model. The guy who originally owned it fell on it and crushed the top beyond repair and a shop in Nashville replaced the top and eliminated the "Tune-O-Matic" bridge with one with a straight saddle. (Bill, if you ever dealt with one of those, you'll probably agree it was a blessing in disguise. They are miserable!). The present owner paid 3K for it six years ago which was probably a good deal considering they are going for 8K and more now.
I played rhythm on a couple songs yesterday on it and wasn't that impressed, although it did have old strings on it, but I've played better ones with more punch. They never were meant for lead, just very good vocal accompaniment. They're known for dropping out in the higher frets.
Anyway, it's always nice to hold and play vintage Gibsons. ::tu:: J.O'.
