Other sharp toys

Post by Canuk sheathmaker »

Hi there other sharp object fans, I'm Robin. These are some of the hawks I make and some from Coal Creek forge that I sold also a couple from a friend of mine who pounds steel. The spike hawks I forged up from some nice old chisels. I do the sheaths.

Best regards

Robin

Thanks Hukk, I LOVE throwing them, the problem lies in 4 feet of snow this time of year :( building a target for my workshop. Do you throw or collect hawks?

Regards

I don't throw anymore - hawks or knives. I learned the hard way that after 2 shoulder surgeries that totaled 11 procedures that I can not throw anything at all. I asked my surgeon about it (great surgeon who interned at The MAYO Clinic in Rochester, NY) and he just asked if I wanted to schedule another surgery if I ever threw as much as a baseball. ::shrug:: LOTS of scar tissue and I had another cortisone shot in my shoulder on Friday as well. I've had enough cortisone shots over the years that they don't even bother me - even when he's moving the needle around the bone and scar tissue.

I have 4 hawk heads made by Craig Barr and pieces of Tiger curl maple for handles just waiting to be put together after I make the handles. I never forged - just stock removal knives and leather work as well. I purchased hawk heads on eBay. I don't know if I will EVER finish those myself - I'm in denial of osteoarthritis that seems to have overtaken my body and now into my hands.

On Saturday I had trouble pouring a cup of coffee and even opening a pill bottle, so, making more knives, sheaths, and hawks is looking like history for me because of my hands. Having pain in both wrists while opening a pill bottle was kind of a wake up call.

It's been great fun but really I should sell my equipment - been mulling that over for the last year and I believe I will be selling out. I know it's not carpal tunnel syndrome - so, it's not anything that will get better with time or surgery - it will get worse.

I sure enjoyed it and don't regret a minute - love the hawks still! ::tu:: ::tu::

Hi there Hukk, sorry to hear about the arthritis, my hands too are getting to be somewhat uncooperative at times. Have you tired glucosamine? I use the Lakota brand called "joint care product" works pretty well for me. Ain't getting old a drag ;-((.

I like Craig Barrs stuff very much, just made a sheath and frog for a chap in Penn. from measurements ;-((((( It actually fit perfectly amazingly enough.
Next time I go out throwing, i'll throw a couple for you. :D

Best regards

Robin
