Fading Bone

I don't post much anymore, being pretty busy with work and such. That said, I'll still read the forum just about daily. To my old and new friends here, hope you are all well, and I plan to meet the NW contingent at the big OKCA show in April.

Anyway, on to my question. I just obtained a nice 1980s 'using' Case trapper. It has one nagging aspect that I'd like to modify. The obverse scale is the nice classic Case greenbone, reddish over the jigging, but the reverse scale is almost black. I hope the pictures show what I am referring to.

I assume, perhaps wrongly, that the lighter side was originally the same color but has faded over time. Looking at the sides it looked like the dark dye was shallow in the bone so I tried to give it a light sanding. No luck.

I'd like to get the scales to match, if possible. Is there a chemical or physical means to change the color on the darker bone?

Where have you been?

I think the best way to get the scales to match is to change the scales.
In other words re-handle the knife or have someone do it for you.

Bring it to the show in April & I will take a look at it.

I haven't received my table number yet, but the last three years it has been O-10.

Hi Dale, and thanks for the welcome back! I'm still working up in Seattle, although I'm living in Tacoma now. The WA club apparently has a show in Tacoma, but I've missed it two years running!

Part of my scarcity, other than time, is that my knife-getting opportunity up here is a bit limited, given that I don't know much about the pawn shop, junk store, flea market circuit up here. That's my favorite way to get knives, and I haven't found much here. The last flea market I went to turned out to be some sort of tax-free supermarket for the non-English-speaking, and nary a decent knife to be found.

I did come into a couple of finds last year though. A nice prewar Remington Barlow, noteworthy for the low price I paid, and I had a stag Pro Guide made for me by Dozier, noteworthy for the fact that I can't seem to take it out of the safe.

Any case, I will be in Eugene in April, God willing. I'm going to start saving now. Thanks for your kind offer - I'll bring the trapper. Let me know if you get up this way any time in the interim and maybe we'll grab a cup. If not, I'll see you in April. Take care!

I do get up there once or twice a year to visit family.
