CUTCO Kitchen knives
Earlier this week, I met with a former student of mine who is raising money for college by selling CUTCO kitchen knives and utensils. Apart from the mistake of thinking that a teacher and a coach made big money and could buy the deluxe complete knife and kitchen utensil set, she made an excellent and impressive presentation. Unfortunately, due to my current fiscal status, I was unable to make any purchases at this time. She was surprised when I pulled out my Case Bois D'arc trapper and sliced through the demonstration rope as smoothly and as quickly as she did with her chef's knife, but that is neither here nor there ....
I read their history online and was surprised to learn that they own Ka-Bar.
Do any of you own and use CUTCO kitchen cutlery? I am thinking about buying a starter set of kitchen knives in the near future, and would like some more information and opinions. Thanks!

Re: CUTCO Kitchen knives
Before you waste your money on Cutco knives go here http://knifeforums.com/forums/fusionbb.php?
then to the subform"In the Kitchen",either search for Cutco or go back 21 pages an the topic is covered very extensively.BTW,if you ask for, say three basic knives in your price range, these guys do nothing but cook and cut food, they will be more than glad to steer you in the right direction.

Re: CUTCO Kitchen knives
I had to laugh when I read this as the very same thing happened to me last night with my nephew trying to sell my wife and I on Cutco. My "Old Hickory" knives were sharpened prior to his arrival and he was amazed how they sliced through the rope and my pocket knife cut through the leather. I wasn't able to help him out either because of our fiscal status as well.

Re: CUTCO Kitchen knives
I have this set http://www.cutco.com/products/product.j ... Group=1818
I've had this set for about 6yrs and have used every blade in it.
Some are better than others for their usefulness. The "chef's" knife
didn't have a nice grind to it (too bulky) and I skip over it most of the time for a Shun when I'm in the kitchen.
Their serrated 'D' edge is very useful, but not when I need a plain blade for paring or boning.
The steak (table) knives have the serration and I find they work great as that.
But, too many knives in this block set are serrated. I bought this set to help a friend of the family, otherwise I wouldn't have done it.
There are many sets that are better and have more to offer than the Cutco. IMHO.
Shun and Victorinox come to mind.

Hello Swordfighter,
For the money IMO, Cutco is way over priced. I've had a set of Henckels Pro S knives for going on 18 years now and they do a fine job for all my cooking chores ... and I love to cook.
LAte Jan. or early Feb. you can find a 7 knife set on sale for under 400.00

Re: CUTCO Kitchen knives
All good points said by others.
First thing to look at is WHO and HOW the knives will be used and my how they will be stored.
My wifey is in the kitchen more than I am. So if your wife is going to use them and she does not like a super sharp knife. Then I would go with the Cutco serrated (to sharp then the ladies cut them selves too much). Now were will they be stored? Wives like to just throw them in a drawer. Well again I say go Cutco. She puts them in the dishwasher and they come out looking new.
To make my life smoother in my house. I have her Cutco in a drawer and a set of J A Henckels in a block with no serrated blades....
She loves her Cutco. I am amassed that they hold a high resale price so well. I never find any Cutcos in a garage sale. They get passed down in the family or estate sales.

I have never used a Cutco knife, but generally speaking I am not to fond of serrated edges (OK on steak knives and bread knives). I like to be able to sharpen my knives easily without having to worry about special serrations of any kind... A plain edge kept sharp will be capable of doing almost any task!Matt Hammon wrote: My "Old Hickory" knives were sharpened prior to his arrival and he was amazed how they sliced through the rope and my pocket knife cut through the leather.

Re: CUTCO Kitchen knives
it is a two blade jack. main blade is plain, smaller blade
is serrated, very, very sharp. main was never sharpened
after grinding. i have only seen one other, and it had one
large blade, about one inch longer than the knife i have.
will try to get a pic on here this weekend.

Actually, I have been wondering about why we don't see more knives featuring both a plain edge blade and a serrated edge blade...

This is my Cutco 1884. Got it in a thrift store for 3 bucks. Yeah, good knife for general carry. When I got mine, one had recently sold on eBay for $63. It's not in production now, the current Cutco pocketknives are lockbacks.

In the past couple of years I've bought maybe 15 Cutco knives (plus some utensils like potato mashers, slotted spoons, etc.) at yard sales, anywhere from 25¢ to a buck each.
They sell pretty well on eBay.
Several of them were in total crap condition (no edge at all, broken blade tips, missing handle rivets, etc.) To Cutco's credit, when I sent them in for sharpening, they just replaced the junk ones with brand-new ones, and the sharpened ones came back looking like new. They really do guarantee them forever.
