Help with this Schrade Walden knife. Maker and year

Will someone help with any information on this knife? I think this knife was made by Camillus in 2005, but am not sure.

Bernard Levine’s first rule is “Read the knife.”
That is hard to do from a picture, so you will have to help me.

Do you have the box for it?
Did it come in a plastic tube?
How long is the knife (closed)?
Does that knife have one or two backsprings? (Schrade made them both ways). I am guessing it has two backsprings.



Most of the Schrade-Waldens I have seen from the 2005 timeframe that were made by Camillus were in the plastic tubes that Taylor got from the Schrade factory at the auction.

Those knives were also made in traditional Schrade patterns & sizes. The same family that owned Schrade owned Camillus. Camillus made many knives for Schrade and already had the tooling for many of the Schrade patterns. They probably also had the parts stock for the knives they made for Taylor.

Tooling is the most expensive part producing any new pattern. It can cost $10,000 to tool up for a new pattern. These knives were produced shortly after Taylor purchased the Schrade intellectual property (i.e., the brand names & designs). I think it is unlikely that Taylor laid out a lot of money to retool for new patterns. Indeed the knives I have from that run are traditional Schrade patterns, in traditional Schrade sizes. All of these I have seen were patterns that Camillus made for Schrade. It was a chance for Camillus to get rid of parts they had on hand and to get paid for them. A win-win situation for Camillus & Taylor.

While that knife looks like the Schrade Waldens made by Camillus circa 2005, the pattern bothers me. The tang stamp looks right as does the blade etch, (as far as I can tell from the picture), but I cannot recall a Schrade muskrat made with the spey blade, at least not anywhere close to the time these knives were made.



After further review of the 2003 and 2006 Camillus catalogs and their patterns, I think your knife was most likely made by Camillus.

However I am told that, Bear & Sons made some knives in that series for Taylor.

At this point I can say it looks like one of the Schrade-Waldens made by Camillus. Camillus was likely the manufacturer of that pattern, but that spey blade bothers me. It may have been made by Bear & Sons.

Going by the pivot pins in the bolsters that can be seen well and look to be of a different steel than the bolsters, my guess is the knife was made by Camillus also. I have seen those noticeable pivot pins on many Camillus knives in the past. Either way, if it was made by Camillus or Bear & Sons, it is a solid knife with plenty of use in it. JMHO.

I am going to go with Camillus, Reason being is the bear & son yellow delrin was a pail yellow delrin , At least the schrade walden - bear&son made knives I have , have pail yellow delrin.
