USA Era - 6111 1/2 L - Display Board Knife - No Pattern #

Post by Bryan »

Hi everyone :D

A gentleman called today about this knife & I'm not sure what to make of it. I asked him to send pictures.

Everything looks good and well as far as authenticity. I know Case made a very small number of 5111 1/2 L Cheetah knives with 1970 stamped blades and no pattern number.

There is also the better known 61111 1/2 L (extra 1) stamp.

I'm guessing this knife is a factory error, but I figured I'd post it in case there is something to the USA era 6111 knives with no pattern number that's new to me...

The faded shield side and tell tail wire line are clear indicators it was a board knife. As far as the pattern stamp anything is possiable..............knife looks good to me.

OK... I have my bearings now... I found out that this a variation that exists on some USA era 6111 1/2 L knives.

Quite rare by my understanding. Worth considerably more than the same pattern with number. I've never seen one and certainly never seen one sell. I have no idea about real world sale price ::shrug:: .

Really cool knife for sure given the fact it is a display board knife and rare variation of the pattern to boot 8)

I talked Tony Foster into adding the "no pattern #" for the USA 6111 1/2's to his list about two years ago. They are actually more rare than the one's with the extra "1". Although no pattern # is more rare he books them at $600.00 while he books the extra 1 at $1,200.00. He and I disagree on this subject.

Katie Shonts actually asked me about this knife but I did not know that Tony had it cataloged as a variation. I told her that it was a factory error that was not worth more than a regular knife with the pattern number. One problem with putting a high value on this variation is that it would be pretty easy for a counterfeiter to buff the pattern number off of a regular USA stamped 6111-1/2L to increase the value, since the pattern numbers were not stamped very deep into the blade steel.

How much have you seen the no pattern number variation sell for Perry? Just curious.

Hey Steve,
I do agree it would be fairly easy to buff the # off. Anytime I see one now I look at it with a loop. I have seen around 25 or so and Tony states about the same. First time I seen one I didn't believe it but Tommy Clark verified it and he's about the best I know. I bought one pumpkin box of 6 still in the wrapping papers a while back and sold them off. When I looked at the box it only looked like only one had ever been unwrapped. I sold them for $425.00 each so it was a good price. Bryan's is the first board knife I've seen without the pattern though. Certainly must have been an error but, no tellling how many their were.

Hi everyone,

Thank you all for your input on this knife. I am the owner of the knife. Here is a bit more background on the knife.

I inherited this knife along with 17 others a few years back. All were part of a Case Display Case #14. The case and knives were displayed in a family hardware store for about 35 years. I took the knives out of the case to document each knife (take pictures, etc.).

I also agree that it would be pretty easy to buff the pattern number off of the knife but this is not the case. Since I inherited the case and knives, it has been hiding in the back of the closet to avoid any more fading of the knives from any light source.

The Case knives were supplied by a dealer out of Erie, PA to my family's hardware store in Cleveland, OH around 1967.

If any of you have any more thoughts on the knife, I would appreciate it if you let me know.
