USA Schrade boxes

There is often confusion when new Schrade collectors buy knives on-line. Many of the Schrade patterns are duplicated in the knives currently being made in China. One clue to knowing if the knife is American made is if you can see the box.

Here are the last four boxes used by Imperial Schrade, USA. In addition these four graphics Schrade also used some plain white boxes. Often but not always they were used for SFO (Special Factory Order) knives. (Note: the dates are approximate and came from a thread in BF. I have not researched the dates personally. I believe in crediting sources I use. -DV)

I hope these help to make things clearer for people buying knives on-line and to help date the knives you have in boxes in your collection.

Here more Schrade boxes.
I am not sure of the date range of each of these packages, but by dating the knife we know when that packaging was used, if not the start & stop dates of that package design.

It makes sense that a company in financial difficulties, as Schrade was in 2003-2004, would not spend the extra money to develop new packaging for the new products in their line. I think this explains the plain white box used for the SQ series of 2003 & 2004.

The Schrade Scrimshaw series lasted for many years. More research is required to date which boxes were used and when.

The old wood grain boxes ended in 1985, I think. I think they began in the 1970s but here again I need to do more research. Perhaps some members of AAPK know when these were used.

I have examples of the plastic tubes in my collection that have inserts marked Schrade Walden and some just marked Schrade. We can conclude that the tubes were used both before and after 1973 when the name change occurred. Again more research is required to establish beginning and ending dates for that packaging.

Obviously I have a lot of loose ends here. I would love input from Schrade Collectors who may know the dates of various packaging types that Schrade/Schrade Walden used.

Most guys that have those keep them with the knife as that adds significantly to the value of a mint knife.

I doubt you will find any for sale here, but if you want to but some, please put it in the Want Ads forum, not within an existing thread.

Noticed that lot on Ebay. Note that there are no end caps with those. An often misplaced item on these "View Pak" tubes. The tubes are a challenge to find, but spare end caps are really tough.

This made in China AP55 shows the last packaging style from Schrade. It is very similar to the Taylor-Schrade packaging, but is easily distinguished by the Imperial Schrade Corp. and address on the backside.
