Petrified Palm scales on a Silver Nickel Buck 110

Post by Redrummd »

Here is a Buck 110 with extremely rare agatized Petrified Palm from Indonesia. It has been a while since I posted any photos' here so I figured I should let everyone know I still am alive and well and still cutting rare stone.

Man that looks nice.

If you don't mind me asking how do you handle the rocker pin in the lock bar when
doing a pinless scales like that?

snorkel,

The rocker arm pin on the new Buck 110's runs through a counter sunk hole in the liner from the factory. I pein the pin and then grind it down to be a bit below the liner. I really do not need to pein it as the stone would hold it in place but I countersink the liners and pein the rocker pins on all of my knives to help ensure there is no way the front pivot pin or the rear pin(s) can ever loosen. Pieing the center pins also helps ensure the liners are flat to give me the best chance for a thin and clean adhesive line at the spine and blade well.

The problem on the Buck 110's is the scale pin at the rear that is a bit above the return spring and below the rocker arm. If adhesive gets in that hole there is a very good chance the knife will lose its snap. I cut a tiny piece of "frog" masking tape and place it over that hole on the outside of the liner where it stays UNDER the stone. I press the tiny piece of tape really thin to ensure it is not too thick to the point it would cause a noticable thickening of the adhesivie line at the rear bolster on the spine.

I tape over all of the liner holes on all the knives from inside the blade well to ensure the adhesive does not make a mess in the wells and to lower the "gumming up the works" potential. This also allows the adhesive to set up in the holes and act as additional support for the scale as a "epoxy" type pin.

There are a lot of tiny details to take care of and to watch carefully in just this one small phase in doing stone knife scales so it is a pretty challenging process from start to finish.

Redrummd; that is a spectacular looking knife, but it is difficult to really assess the piece without seeing and fondling it personally. Please send it my way for a thorough going over. PM me for shipping instructions. Seriously, is it available? At what price point?

Beautiful workmanship! If I were to send you some semi-precious stone and a knife, could you do something for me. Maybe a mosaic of large pieces of turquoise and lapis, with maybe some silver divisions or??? How about agate?

I just realized that we are practically neighbors!
