Cleaning?

Any suggestions for cleaning up a vintage knife? I don't want to do anything that would change the appearence, just clean off the accumulated dirt and grunge and brighten it up a bit. The one I have in mind has bone scales but I'm thinking of other materials too. Just a cloth and mineral oil? How about using the finest grade steel wool?

Thanks in advance. I've learned a lot from this site in a short time and have seen some beautiful knives. A great place to hang out...

I have found mineral oil to be great. It is about the safest thing to use and I think many here will agree. Put some all over the knife and let stand awhile. Take a wooden toothpick to scrape away dirt etc. Doing this will leave the patina intact. You can use steel wool but I think Scotch Brite pad may work better. Green things found at the grocery store in dish washing section. Also search in the forums on cleaning knives and you will find some good posts. Hope this helps. good luck
