I guess this one would fool me, only thing that bothers me is that shield is sitting so high. I don't kave many Docs so I would like to hear more on this one.

Never mind the sellers other knives, or what a wonderful and honest man he is. It's to our advantage to come to our conclusions based soley on the knife at hand. Both blades stamped(if the stamps were real) tells me from experience that I would be dealing with an early tested knife(years before WWII). Now look at the sheild, sitting proud of the bone, instead of imbedded like it should be(Open C short S) used from 1960s and later. What's wrong with that picture??? Look at the bone, look at the handle pins. Not the real article IMO.

There were Case made/marked pill busters made in germany in the 1990's, I think this frame is from one of them, the blades may be the original blades just ground and restamped otr engraved. DC

In the late 1980's or early 1990's Charlie Dorton, George Smith, and Mr. Scott(Blue Grass Cutlery) bought the Utica Factory Collection(Which contained not only Utica Knives but also knives that they had made on contract for other companies such as W R Case). They also bought all the old parts in the factory. There were 2 tractor trailer loads. The parts were sold to an individual in Louisville, Ky who has been building knives from those old parts for many years. He does very good work. He calls what he does "Remanufacturing". He doesn't try to pass them off as anything other than what they are. He usually gets about $40.00 for a knife. Over the years he has made thousands of Kutmasters, Case, etc. Like the one referred to in this thread, IF you know what the originals looked like you can readily distinguish his knives from old originals. It is after they leave his hands that other people try to pass them off as old originals. Love him or hate him??? Probably 90% of the really good looking fakes I see are his work.

That is a fascinating piece of knife lore. It makes me wonder how much true fame and acclamation some of these "remanufacturers" or in many cases plain "counterfeiters" could have gained if they had used their talents to make knives under their own names. I look at our own customizers and manufacturers like Muskrat Man and others who clearly mark their knives, and think that their names will be known with honor whereas the poor man from Louisville, as fine a craftsman as he is, has a name that can never be mentioned. Thank you Steve for telling that story, it makes clear a lot of the cryptic references I have seen on the board about the "source" for the many ebay Case counterfeits.
