Utility/Scout Knives serrations ?

Hi,

Can any one shed any light on this Question? I have several Case Scout and Utility knives. On the inside liner there always appears to be serrations of sort. All of my other knives do not have this detail

Those are what's referred to as "milled" liners. Looks like a knife that's in pretty good shape. C'mon, show us a pic of the front see we can get our knife fix

I wish that one was mine. I was afraid the bidding was going through the roof so I never started. But then I don't play poker well either. I have the utility,Scout jr's the smaller versions. The clean milled liner on this one made me look at my own stash. On my knives the liner is filled up with rust/dirt but is still visable.

Do you know why they did this machine work to these patterns? Was it done to other patterns too?

To the best of my limited knowledge, the milling of the liners is purely a decorative touch
meant to dress up the looks of the knife.


I too have a few older scout knives that sport the milled liner "look".

Probably showing my ignorance, but here goes:

Why would they decorate the inside edges of the liners and then grind the outside edges smooth?

Could it have been a contrivance to help retain oil along the length of the backsprings?

Robeson (now I'm in comfortable territory ) did a lot of milled work on their liners. I'll have to take a peak inside a few to see if the inside edges were also milled.

I'm with phil on this one...I have seen them referred to as "coin edged" liners also.

I guess that makes sense, however My thought is why not mill the outside were it is really visable, Oh well with pocket knive collecting we can't think too much, most of us weren't around then

Does anyone have a fairly pristine example of that model. Perhaps the outside of the liners was milled when new. If there was a lot of pitting/rust on the backsprings, and someone took a belt to it with gusto, the first thing to go would be the milling.
