I purchased a blade and bolsters to make my first fixed blade. The bolster (Boster was cast metal and rough when I got it) and bolster pins are Nickle Silver. The handle pins and thong tubing are 416 stainless. The blade is cryo treated 8A stainless that tests to 60 Rc. The wood is Katalox with a fiddleback pattern that I cut 2, 1/2 inch thick scales from a 2 x 6. Anyway, I shaped the wood and bolsters to the tapered tang. OAL is 9 3/4 inches. The scales were thicker than needed, but I tapered and rounded the wood scales to fit my hand. I was pleasently surprised with the results, everything is very symmetrical. The first picture just show the knife in different lighting to see the wood, which comes from the Yucatan. The blade was mirror polished, so the glare makes it difficult to see the rest of the knife.
Purchasing a blade to make my first few knives makes good sense as it helps to get aquainted with the equipment. I will be making a few more with purchased blades before I grind my own. I was going to wait until I had finished the sheath before I posted this, but I thought I would post it now, undecided on which style of sheath to make. I think it's a bit big for a pouch style, but I may do it that way anyway. It's all about doing whatever pleases you when you make your own anyway.

What you are doing as a beginning maker, is what all should do. Get a kit, learn the equipment and the process. It will save you alot of wasted materials and heartache

Thanks for the compliments, And, amen to that e3ck, I have read way to many posts where someone has 50 or so failed knives in a scrap bin, I hope to stay out of that situation.
