Buck 110 with their Damascus blade and Psilomelane scales

It has been a long time since I posted any pictures but things have slowed down recently so I have time to post more.

The stone used is Psilomelane, which was only found in one location - The Crown Of Silver mine in Mexico. This stone is also known as Crown Of Silver for the same reason.

Crown of Silver Psilomelane

Very rare-very hard to get-and very messy to cut! This is Psilomelane-AKA Crown of Silver Psilomelane from the Silver Crown Mine in Chihuahua, Mexico.

This wonderful stone (pronounced si-lah''-mi-lane) is a type of manganese ore. Crown of Silver Psilomelane is manganese oxide in cryptocrystalline quartz. It is a shiny metallic black with silver banding and swirls, hence the name.

The Crown of Silver mine was opened in 1940 for the war effort and was closed in 1947. In the 1950s the mine was reportedly worked by old Mexican miners for the lapidary market before it became unsafe to enter the mine. It was pilfered for a few years and then reopened in 2003, but I understand it was forced to be closed from too many cave ins.

WOW. That is spectacular, good choice on the damascus blade. If I were you I'd never let that one out of my personal collection. You've posted alot of knives I've really liked, but that is by far the best looking 110 I've ever seen.

Elivis, that is nice to hear about the Seahorse knives. if you want to see a Damascus one in Psilomelane, here is a photo of the one I have listed on my website. Too bad they are not making the Seahorse now - I am hunting for them on Ebay now.

Case has designated the Seahorse as a heirloom or special pattern and do not intend to do any more runs until 2013 according to a knife publication I get. Of course with the economy being what it is it would not suprise me a great deal if they start up sooner.

Where did you get the Damascus blade from? Or is that a factory 110?
The scales look incredible. Do you every do ones with pins in them or is it just impracticable with stone?

The Damascus blade is by Buck knife company. They have not had any for several years though.

Pins are not possible for stone but the stone ABSOLUTELY will not come off. You need a hammer and chisle to remove the stone in pieces and the actual knife is usually destroyed....
