SCHRADES MY TRUE LOVE

Schrade Cutlery Company was founded in 1904 by George Schrade, and his brothers Jacob and William Schrade. In 1946 Imperial Knife Associated Companies, (IKAC; an association of Ulster Knife Co and Imperial Knife Co) purchased controlling interest in Schrade Cut Co and changed the name to Schrade Walden Cutlery. In 1973 the name was changed to Schrade Cutlery. In 2004 Schrade closed due to bankruptcy.

This forum is dedicated to the knives that are the legacy of this company. This forum is not the place to discuss the replica knives currently being imported using the Schrade name.

Thanks MM,
The knife you show looks like a TL-29 or some variation of it. Nice work. ::tu::
The whole process looks pretty simple to me. I want to do some after the holidays. I was wondering if anyone else had attempted it. What did you make the bolsters of, nickle silver? Were there any specific problems you encountered?

I would love to know your your process. You have my email.

Happy Holidays,
Dale

I posted a picture of this case before in regards to another subject and I promised that I would start getting into the knives themselves on this thread so I thought this display would be good to begin with. It is from the thirtys this is denoted by the wood frame. Prior to this they used all glass with a wood bottom and spring loaded wood door with mirror. This case is logoed in gilt paint on the back of the glass also indicative of this period. Prior to this the glass was etched. As we go through the various years from beginning 1904 till end 2004 you will notice the changes in materials and styles of marketing displays which were used. This display shows it is pre 46 because it is marked Schrade Cutlery CO . I have chosen 8 knifes to start with to individually show. I choose the tooth pick style since I believe it is Phils favorite. There are 2 in Cell one is an early advertiser for Swift. Notice the different blade grinds. There is a jigged bone model and a rare black cell Schrade Cut fishermans knife with scaler opener blade. This is I believe the same knife pictured in Sargeants one and two. The three big knives are jigged bone and variations of the fishermans pride ( similar to a large barlow pattern two have the backblade scaler one is a liner lock version. I also have a pic of another advertiser this is a manual letter opener. I hope to continue through this case and then start on another I hope you enjoy the pics. LT

Great pics and great knives LT, you collection continues to amaze me.

Dale, Actually I used the stock bolsters, I'll email you the process, so's not not hijack the thread. The knife was an imperial shell handle electricians knife with whithered up cell, I tore it back apart into a thin single bladed knife, it's still waiting to be finished.

Well I have a bit of time again so here are some more Schrade Cuts from that 1930tys display case . Next time I hope to move on to another old case full. This group has a couple of 1104 large single blade hunters in jigged bone. Two hunters ( single and double bladed ) in waterfall cell ( kind of rare ) I believe these were from the Herman Williams collection and are the ones in Sargeants 1 and 2 . There is an early TL-29 . both versions of the Schrade Cut sailors ( marlin spike knives ). Note Schrade cuts unlike the later Schrade Waldens did not have the Marlin spike lock release and were in real jigged bone. Although supposidly some of the early Schrade waldens were supposed to be in bone but mostly are found with jigged delrin. Some of the Schrade cuts as you can see had stainless handles. The last three are favorites of mine and also are getting scarce. They are 3 moose patterns ( these are the large models 4,1/4" ) also called the large cigar or Jumbo Moose. The one with a large spear and pen on one side is a Jack moose. the other two with the large spear and clip on either side are the true large moose patterns. I looked for a long time to acquire them especially the clip spear models, the one is in l nice shape the other however is in near mint blades have the original high polish and are full it is just a peach. I recently got it at the Furrows Knife aution from tenn live and on line. Naturally i had just closed the deal on the other one so now I have two OH BOO HOO right. that is how it usually happens ( I believe I can live with two of them). I hope you like the pics LT

Nice TL-29 LT!!! ::tu:: They are all nice, but I especially like the the TL.
I really like the shield on yours. It dresses up the knife nicely.

It just so happens I have a thing for old TL-29's. Having carried a Camillus all through my time in the Marine Corps, including overseas, I really appreciate the quality & durability of these old girls.

My wife totally surprised me this Christmas. She had asked me what knife I wanted and I told her I was currently collecting TL-29"S (and explained what they were) and I also had my eye on a split back Ulster whittler. I was watching the Ulster & knew she won it so I was quite pleased. Imagine my surprise on Christmas morning when I opened a package with three TL-29's in it. The first was a nice wood handled no-name. The second was a great wood handled Kingston, and the third was this Schrade Cut Co. I was really excited!! ::ds:: ::ds:: She asked, "Did I do good?" I said, "You did outstanding!"

Not to hijack the thread, but that is how I got my Cut Co TL-29.

Question LT;
"Which is the older one, yours with the shield or mine with the TL-29 stamped/engraved in the wood (along with some bozo's initials)? Or can they be dated by that criterion?

Mine you are WWII. Yours was issue that was the mark Is that RL my initials. He may have died carrying that knife in the line of duty who knows ? Sure wish these knives could talk. I can almost see this in the pocket of a young seabee building a landing strip in the pacific theater. 17 years old and proudly carving his initials while sucking down some GI 3.2 and feeling like a man. That knife will never be a high ender there are a zillion around many unused and from a lot of companies. However to get one that someone thought enough of to mark well to me in this case it just seems better. Take care of Bozos knife apparently it meant alot to him. LT

I thought your initials were L. T.

How come you put your initials on my knife????

I thought that might be the case on the dating. I think I have a couple other WWII era TL's with the nomenclature stamped on the side of the knife. By the time I was issued one during Vietnam they had switched to the black plastic material (Delrin?) and no shield or nomenclature on the knife other than the manufacturers tang stamps.

Thanks to the info LT.

Actually there was a good reason to put your initials on your TL in the military. If two or three guys were working on a piece of equipment & you lay your knife down, another guy is likely to pick up your knife & claim it is his. Especially if he cannot sharpen a knife & you can.

So.........this bozo (me) put his initials on both sides of his TL.
Besides, if you had your initials on it, the military was less likely to want it back. I came home on a medevac flight so they sent all my stuff to me later, including my TL.

I know I have been a bit remiss but Bryan and myself are cooking something up and it has been taking up a lot of time. It seems it will take me a lot more . I also wanted to give everyone some time to digest Charlies ( upnorth ) collection is is really something to see. However at this point I thought I would show another display case in the evolution of Schrades advertising display cases. ( I stopped going in order however felt this would be a good one to explain since it was the next generation after the last one which was wood framed and had gilt paint on glass ( 30tyslettering. ) the first ones which I have shown for other reasons and hope to show again were mostly etched glass with mirrored wood access doors and wood bottom frames. ( 20tys and earlier).

This is one I recently accquired after searching for many years. ( all over the country) It was so to speak right in my back yard. There is a little antique store in Montgomery NY about 15 minutes from my house. I try to check out most of the antique stores in the area. However the owner has another job and the place is usually closed. I happened to be over at an auction house in the area and the auction owner mentioned that the fellow next door(ie antique shop) had an old Schrade case I usually do not get to excited about those leads since usually they are modern stuff of which I have a couple of buildings full. However he mentioned that it was all real wood and that was enough to move me to go look through the closed shops window. When i saw it I knew what it was ( since I had seen them before ) it was indeed the missing link in the chain of this part of the Schrade evolution. If you look at the pictures of the case it will tell its own story if you know how to read it. First there is no paint or etch on the glass in front. Well actually in these pics there is no glass since I took it out to take the pics but imagine that there was glass and there is nothing on it. Take my word the glass is clear no writing. The writing in gold gilt paint is now on the wood ( which if you go back in this thread you will see is of a lesser quality than the cases of the 30tys.) As displays continue on the time line materials change and usually cheapen. This one would be considered much to expensive to produce now but was a step down from what preceeded it. Also during the war years 41-45 ( or so ) people just used the old displays any building materials and concern went to the war effort. So now back to this old display where did it fit in well if you look a bit closer you will see that while it carries the Schrade everlastingly sharp logo it does not say Schrade Cutlery Co or Schrade Walden . Simply Schrade. Well any student of Schrade knows that in the mid fortys its tang mark and name went from Schrade Cutlery to Schrade Walden. ( After the war and when the Baers took over ). This curious lack of information is exactly the information needed to discern where this case fits in this history. You see when Schrade went back to producing these displays after the war they were not sure what they were going to do and were selling knives under both markings Schrade Cut old stock and Schrade Walden new stock. So if they put either one or the other marking on the display customers would ( human nature being what it is ) obviously ask for the other one. In other words if it just said Schrade then no one would be confused and would purchase the knife for its merits and not its marking. So what all these things tell you is that this case is from the late fortys or very early 50tys.

That being said I have filled the display with both Schrade Waldens and Schrade cuts. I have also taken some pics of the knives in it. If any one would like me to explain or show any of these better please let me know. There are some interesting patterns bartenders knives in stainless and cell. They stopped making the cell version since the angles of the cell made for a lot of breakage and excess manufacturing time when the workers had to cut the handles. There is a small stainless with a ruler and some other interesting patterns. Again if any one shows an interest I will focus on individual knives. I did take a couple of individual shots of two knives a 292 fishing trapper pattern bone handles fish shield in stainless with fish scaler and opener second blade. The second knife is very rare it is from the fiftys and has an oriental marking on the pearl handles. It is a Schrade Walden in fact it was ordered made and marked that way by Henry or Albert Baer I always get confused on which one did what. In any event both of the baers were thought of very highly by the Sears organization and as most of you know Schrade made on contract, many of the knives Sears marketed. So in the 50tys Sears asked ( I think it was Albert to go to Japan ( as there represenative ) and negotiate a contract with the japanese for transisor radios which were just hitting the market. Before he left Mr Baer had some of these pearl knives made and marked with the manufacturers Chop mark to give to him as a gift. This one came from one of the then executives of Schrade which had been given to him by Mr Baer. So upon that note I will conclude this posting. By the way the surprise I mentioned is no big deal and no secret. I have been watching the postings and it seems getting new old stock Schrades is getting tougher out there so I am attempting to open a store on the site to make these items, memorbilia, display cases, and other antique or vintage items more readily available. It will be a while but it is coming along. Some of these items will be one of a kind and rather high end however some of the items will be quite inexpensive. LT

Very nice LT, can't wait to see the store. It sounds like that knife I have with the "Schrade Walden" stamp on one blade and the " Schrade Cut Co " one the other would fit nicely in that case, if you ever want it you can have it for what I paid. Glad to see you posting again, I thought maybe you had lost interest. Rick

Musky Here are some pics I think this is the knife you were referring to, the vernacular, common name for this pattern is the farmers jack. here are some pics of the bone version and the fibestos with the bark loosener budding blade. They made single blade versions with the spey. however the handle pattern was different. There were several other variations as well. I just thought I would pull the fibestos one out since you inquired about the bone one and it is the same pattern they are both rare but the fibestos one with the woof woof (barking blade ) is super rare.

Any thing else spark anyones interest.

I never lose interest in these but frankly it is tough doing everything by your self. Somedays I get quite a few questions along with a couple other projects the knife bill in Albany and everything else I am sorry if I miss something. LT PS Sometimes I do get a little frustrated.

Thats the one LT ::tu:: ,
I love that pattern of knife. I've never been lucky enough to own one, but the looks and blades just really get my attention. I seen a bone handled one on ebay some time ago, tried to snipe it, but someone sniped it higher than me, it ended up going for about $125, but it was clean, real clean. I'll run accross one eventually. That bark loosener blade is really something, a very interesting shape, with a purpose too. I like the clean lines of the fibestos handled one with no bolsters. Sweet knives LT! ::tu:: ::tu::

Just wonderful, LT! I could be greedy, and ask for closeups of ALL the knives, but I'd definitely be satisfied with the reddish bone teardrop jack just under the corkscrew knives in the display. Do you mind showing me the blades in that one.
I hope I didn't hold you up by sticking my knives in here!?! I can always start a different thread if you prefer. I absolutely don't want to disrupt the flow here!

I was not sure which knife you wanted to see here are two jacks from that case actually these are overruns I mainly keep jacks together in another display but ran out of room. A nice problem. I hope you were kidding about another posting it is great to have someone with a selection and willing to share it. It gives me a little chance to catch up while yours are being enjoyed and digested.
