SCHRADES MY TRUE LOVE

Schrade Cutlery Company was founded in 1904 by George Schrade, and his brothers Jacob and William Schrade. In 1946 Imperial Knife Associated Companies, (IKAC; an association of Ulster Knife Co and Imperial Knife Co) purchased controlling interest in Schrade Cut Co and changed the name to Schrade Walden Cutlery. In 1973 the name was changed to Schrade Cutlery. In 2004 Schrade closed due to bankruptcy.

This forum is dedicated to the knives that are the legacy of this company. This forum is not the place to discuss the replica knives currently being imported using the Schrade name.

Giving LT a breather!

Post by upnorth »

No cash changed hands here! Traded for these on Saturday. I put out the word at my monthly knife club meeting that I was looking for Schrades to trade, and this month these turned up;
A Schrade Cut. a K-horn, and 2 Waldens. The Cut. Co. came from the factory board, and has a model number on the back. The others appear unused!

I am starting to get interested in Ulsters, the venerable Ellenville predecessors of many Schrade knives. Here is one I got from a friend in Kentucky. Other than a poorly done re-pinning job, it is clearly all original looking. I wonder if anyone can give me a time frame for its manufacture??
I've tried to get a close-up of the tang marks.

That marking was used from 1876 to 1941. However the style of the knife ( pattern ) and the style of the tang stamp says it is very early. While it would be difficult to give an exact date I would say if you took 1900 as a median and plus or minused it 15 years it would fall or be close in the range. If I had to guess I would say pre 1900 but that is only an opinion without a reference. LT

Charlie,
I think that is one of the earlier tang stamps with Ellenville on it, but I am no expert.......I just love Ulsters.
Dang, you are starting to like them.......more competition. ::dang::

LT should be along before long and give us all the info on your knife. Nice knife ::tu::

GlennL sent this info about his knives.
He'd love some info on them and possible value's

1) N.Y. U.S.A. Pattern# 233, MINT, with different shield than shown on
the index.
2) Schrade+ 897UH-"Special Edition" etched on the master blade and all
3 blades have a bead-blast finish,,also mint.
3) S.C.C.+ USA 898 UH--Med Serpentine Stockman-Red Staglon, serpentine-
shaped master blade has, extremely-high pull, ground-half topedge,
also MINT.
4) NY U.S.A. 885UH-Master blade has pull longer than half the blade
from tang, also ground top more than 3/4 from tip. Back strap appears
to be "fileworked" and not brass but a silver-colored metal spacer-
liner (in lieu of a better word). The 2 lessser blades are also tang
stamped "stainless" and this knife has a serial number stamped on the
inside of the liner. MINT
5) N.Y. U.S.A. 285UH- Extremely high nail-nick type pull on the master
blade, and ground top edge. Spey tang stamped "stainless". has brass-
liners-spacers also 'fileworked' and inside spacer stamped serial
number.

These Schrades spoke to my "little birdie"

Post by ilikeknives »

That being the one who tells my intuition these were kinda different/special, not sure why though, hence my letter to LT (thanks again L)
These have sat in my office for well over a year now, and I have no idea what they are, what they are worth, nada.
Case Classics have been my pursuit and forte' lo these last 5 or so years, however, I am seeing many other patterns, past and present, to my liking.
Furthermore, as my good friend Dennis has quipped, Case just doesn't seem to have the same vision and quality these last many years. Nothing really dominating the market. I wonder if knives such as these, along with the others my lil' pigeon draws my attention and dollars toward, will be the "next thing?". Certainly, companies such as Schatt and Morgan, Canal Street, etc., are calling me and have the quality and asthetic to surpass the dinosaur.
Any help, all help, would be appreciated.
Of course, any help as to the future and current value(s) is the 16oz T-Bone I am searching for.
I am NOT a profiteer. I do sell knives occasionally, and perhaps down the road I may take my business to another level, the knowledge I seek is for my own noggin. Time sure seems to fly when I plan to hold knives. Something rib-jabs me that these would be best "put away", after being cared for and Ren-Waxed etc.
Hey Roger, guess what?, an actual rather short post, can you believe it?? Hahahaha Good knifing to you all.

Hello I am a bit confused by the names and who is who and what is going on. However regarding the group Larry posted it is really just variations of the regular stuff Schrade put out. One factor I guess forgotten is that Schrade tried every variation and contract offering possible. These have about the same value as similar versions. Jimping ( the little lines on the back liners was done for quite a few issues some incorporated it with some light filework on the backsprings, shields styles often varied with sets to give them some individuality. The special edition electro etch was used on these sets for the same reasons ( like perhapes a 885 packaged with another UH pattern and put in a box maked for a particular organization )as an item or issue ordered on contract These sometimes had more elaborate differences than the normal versions but sometimes ( for the organization to save money only had a special box and special edition to differenciate it. Numbers on the inside liners was used for a while as an alternative to bolster numbering both were eventually done away with as to costly and not serving much purpose ( originally used as a registration control for guarantees. or club member collections ) Bolster numbering was and is still viable for limited editions. That dull finish has a name which I forget but was used on a lot of issues. The shield on the 233 was quite common in the seventys. Again with Schrade nothing is written in stone that is ( as I have maintained for a long time ) why Schrades are fun you just never know what might have come out of the factory on any given day. These are not anomalitys as much as just variations. Like I said value about the same as any of the same pattern from Schrade however to the collector more interested in the mfg aspect of these items they are wonderful my interests do not usually lean that way but to many it is the best part of the study. I believe putting these away and getting as many of the variations as possible down the road would lead to a unique and invaluable addition to this history. I do not know if this answers what you are looking for as I said I am still trying to figure out who is who in this post. So if i interpreted the question incorrectly please just accept this posting as an opinion regarding these or similar knives that pop up. I would put all of these knives in the 20 to 50 dollar range. Again just an opinion. The pics are great and I always enjoy them Thankyou LT

Here is a sweet little Schrade Walden I got recently. (Forgive the double post but I also posted it in the Celluloid thread)

I was going through a lot of knives I bought and was pleasantly surprised to find such a gem. The blades look dark because of the scanner, but in fact are quite nice, with very little patina.

Charlie,
I saw it in the pile, but figured it was a cheap import (I didn't pay attention to the bolsters). So when I really looked at it I was tickled. ::ds::

Here is another celluloid, a Hammer Brand shell (Imperial Hammer). The celluloid on this one is in pretty good condition compared to some of these I see.

Good one GB. ::tu::
It is nice to get something like special like that from your kids.

I was not too far from you this morning. I was up to see my doc at the VA in Vancouver. We have other members of the forum from the Pacific NW.

Are you coming down to the Eugene show in April?

I know I should be into the next display case on this thread. ( By the way it will be a 20tys and earlier full glass Schrade Cut display ) with dozens of Schrade cuts in it. However I just finished a small ( but heavy ) new display for the 14-OT and 144UH models. I had held off doing it since I had sold all the 144UH models I had however a newly acquired collection had a brand new old stock in box so I could finally proceed with the project. I used a Schrade Classics display case ( which I have a few of and some of you might be familiar with since I have sold some in the past) I also had a 14-OT in staglon and a 14-OT in wood. Now with the UH I could put all three together with the original steel tooling dies originally used to make the handles for them ( Staglon and delrin not the wood ones ). However it allowed me to put it all together for a one of a kind display ( which considering the progress on museum display law ) will probably only be seen ( for the most part by people who visit my house ). These dies are pretty rare but as long as one set is saved it is not extinct. So when I do a display like this I feel like a small piece of a pleasant history has been saved. I do not really understand why but saving these artifacts is important to me kind of like getting to strike back against total loss of the memory of all the Americans who created this part of history. In any event I have no where to put it ( about the only spot left would be if I took the paper off the roll in the bathroom and set it on top of the roll holder. ) I could also look at it a lot and often that way. Seriously some rooms have over 50 displays most larger than this one. Sorry about the pics but, you should be able to get an idea from them. I hope you enjoy them. LT
