How Well Do You Know Your Knife History?
Seeing this is "Knife Lore" I wanted to change the pace in this forum from just posting pictures of old pocket knives to this thread where you can learn interesting facts about the old companies that made these knives we covet.
I will start out with a fairly easy question, see if you can get the right answer.
What is the very first model (number) pocket knife Remington produced in 1920?

Very good!
Yes, it was the R-103 that started it all
Now for a harder one
What is the name of the book that John Russell read that inspired him to start a cutlery company with his brother the very same year?

William Rodgers was a large Sheffield knife manufacturer in the old days.
What street were they located on in the 1960`s?

The William Rodgers name and trademark I Cut My Way were owned by John Clarke & Son at the time. That company was based on Mowbray Street.

Not really knife history, but knife related trivia:
In Havanna Cuba is a museum known as the Hemingway House. Yes, it is the house where Ernest Hemingway lived.
In what manner is Hemingway's knife collection displayed?

Stainless steel was invented in 1914 and first used in knife production in 1915.
Who is credited with the "invention" of stainless steel?

Re: How Well Do You Know Your Knife History?
It was developed almost simultaneously in the U.S and in England.
Elwood Haynes was working on it in 1912 in the U.S.
Harry Brearly of Sheffield England was working on it at the same time in 1912.
Haynes patented it in the U.S. first and Brearly patented it first in England.
Every once and a while an old Haynes pocket knife will appear for sale on feebay.
Wish I had one

Obadiah Barlow got the barlow ball rolling in about 1670. He was said to have been a really sharp fellow.
