Finally finished one - Franken TL-29

Finally got around to trying my first custom, ain't much, but it functions. I figured if I was going to learn peening, best to start with "indestructable scales"

Of course, I can't be normal, so I decided to use the liner lock, and the screwdriver blade !! (next time, no liner lock, that was a pain) But i do like the TL-29 as a beginners custom knife. It's perfect to learn on, built like a tank, and large enough to work with.

I've done a couple of those for some maintenance guys at work. They didnt want the blade or the bail, just the screwdriver and liner lock. It makes a nice, slim pocket screwdriver. I bet you're wanting to do another now, aren't you? Hehehe!!!

Nice work!. They are alot of fun, and fairly easy to work with. I have done a few and am working on a couple more right now.

You can actually get quite creative with this pattern.

Thanks guys ! My peening is still an adventure, never know what it will look like, but these make great guinea pigs. I'm definately going to avoid the liner lock for awhile, it was a pain to compress the spring with that thing in. I still need a belt sander, so right now it's all hand filing and sanding.

I've got a dremel, but need a way to lock it down so I can hold the work against the bit, instead of the other way around !

Your knife looks fine and so does the peening.
If this if your first re-do and all you have to work with are hand tools and a dremmel you have to use free hand, can you imagine the work you will be producing with the right tools and a little more practice?
Sounds like you enjoyed this re-do?

And when you enjoy what your doing, you will only get better at it.

Yea~ I'm no stranger to getting a little to head strong into it.
When I first started out fixing knives I would try too hard to get it done too fast and end up
messing things up and actually ruining a few of them.
Now after years of doing it I've found out taking your time, planning every step that will be involved in advance is the way to go.
You will also have to plan on and expect problems to happen while into your project.
The best thing to do when this happens is to walk away from it. Think over every option for the solution to the problem that will be the easiest and least evasive. Even if the only option is to tear apart and start over.
With trial and error we gain knowledge.
We can only learn from our mistakes.

The TL-29 is the easiest knife to learn on, IMHO.

I have taken out the screwdriver, filed the blade to take the linerlock and made a single blade linerlock knife from a TL-29.
I have added longer bolsters to make them into Barlows.
I have made them into easy openers.

They are about the most forgiving knife to work on that I have found!

Now you are hooked….no turning back!

They seem to be getting popular, but I'm still able to pick em off the bay for $10 or less. And they're definately the best intro knife for customizing, solid and forgiving. It's kind of hard to break a tank !
