New member with first knife...possible Schrade?

Schrade Cutlery Company was founded in 1904 by George Schrade, and his brothers Jacob and William Schrade. In 1946 Imperial Knife Associated Companies, (IKAC; an association of Ulster Knife Co and Imperial Knife Co) purchased controlling interest in Schrade Cut Co and changed the name to Schrade Walden Cutlery. In 1973 the name was changed to Schrade Cutlery. In 2004 Schrade closed due to bankruptcy.

This forum is dedicated to the knives that are the legacy of this company. This forum is not the place to discuss the replica knives currently being imported using the Schrade name.

New member with first knife...possible Schrade?

Post by bigbevo76 »

The Schrade name has a "+" behind it and looks like it was defaced for some reason. Does this mean it was a reject or something? I am just getting into this. I think its from around 1989, at least thats the date the artist put behind his name

A grind like that (and there are others) would typically mean the knife was pulled from the regular production. What happened to "second" knives I don't know, but I'm sure some ended up in the bankruptcy sale and some maybe to employees. Georgiani did the art for lots of the Schrade knives, mostly the Outdoor series. I guess the millions were produced through some sort of lazer process. The "plus" sign means stainless steel, although its absence does not necessarily mean that it is not stainless steel, when speaking of the later Schrade years. The pattern exists in several variations, NOT including the images that appear on the ivory colored Delrin. There are green and brown Old Timers, some with stainless, some not, two or three Uncle Henrys, some with thumb studs, some with a liner lock, etc., etc. And Camillus made some similar ones. And some for Craftsman.That pattern doesn't look too substantial, but I have a friend who has field dressed hundreds of game animals with one, and caped more than a few. It is really a very handy pattern.

Thanks a ton for taking the time to respond to a newbie like me. The info you provided is invaluable. I liked the design as it was close to a basset hound (I have two) although its probably a beagle.

Also, I paid $30 for it at a gun show? too much?

Here's one with 2 X's across the tang stamp.
This one hasn't much snap, probably why it's a second.

bigbevo76 ::welcome:: to AAPK.

The grind offs or XX outs where seconds.
As Cal mentioned, it is often hard to figure why they were seconds.
The process for doing the scrimshaw was called "Hot Stamping."
A heated die was stamped on the handle and then ink was applied to make the stamp show up like scrimshaw.

The model 515SC is the scrimshaw version of the 5OT or the 5UH.
