Is there anyone here who lives or used to live in Southern Georgia with some good area living tips?

I am thinking of relocating to Southern GA and I need some help deciding where to look for houses.
So far the wife likes Pooler, Alpharetta, and Tybee island.

I need something well south of Atlanta, something close but preferably south of Savannah.
I am asking y'all where we can live so I can still Hunt Fish and Camp without having to drive 100 miles.

ANY help at all will do, thanks in advance!

Well, as the saying goes, "If momma ain't happy, ain't nobody happy." and I see she has picked two suburbs of Savannah and one close to Atlanta so I'm guessin' she needs/wants to be close to a larger metropolitan area. That's just a guess with very little facts to go on.

How much of southern Georgia have you visited? Maybe a little vacation is in order? If you don't have much experience with the area, a couple of days of driving around is a good start. If you've been there a few times (or even once) you probably already have something in mind.

Do you feel a need to be close to the ocean? How far is momma willing to drive to get her "civilization" fix? How's your health? (defines the distance to decent hospitals and doctors)

I've only driven through so I know little to nothing about the area. What I do know is, the south can be a real culture shock if you live in the north. Same, same with the rural south if you live in a city. An old friend moved to Arkansas when he retired. Saw him last week and he wants to move back to N. Illinois. Too hot for him in the summer time. You may have already considered these things, then again, maybe not.

Edit: One thing I forgot to mention was hurricanes. I noticed your wife had an interest in Tybee Island. Hurricanes don't happen every year but they need to be taken into consideration. Second thing is proximity to children and grandchildren. Distance can be good or bad, depending on your family issues or lack thereof. Not trying to be negative. Just some random thoughts on the subject.

We have never been there so the Wife and I were thinking about flying down for a Thursday through Sunday trip to the area.
As far as the ocean, There seems to be plenty of shoreline but I didnt see much beach area aside from Tybee on Google Earth..
My health is actualy still kind of up in the air so a good healthcare facility is as important as a home and a metro area.

Momma NEED'S water! If we cant find a place close to the ocean she will HAVE to have a pool,
and so I would much rather find a place already with a pool rather than having to go through the headache of having one put in.

Marty, if you're a history buff, Savannah is a great place to be.
Tybee is nice. There's a lighthouse on the island with some historical significance, as well as Fort Pulaski (not on the island, only about 4 miles away).

Right across the SC border is Charleston. Folks in Savannah compare themselves to Charlestonians in this fashion: "In Charleston, everyone wants to know where your family is from. In Savannah, they want to know about your favorite drink."

Funny you mentioned Charleston, that is another option for us and I would actually prefer Charleston SC over anywhere in GA.

Also, I heard that St. Patrick's day in Savannah is compaired to Mardi Gras in New Orleans...?

Marty one other option, if you don't mind whether your water is salty or fresh:
There are probably five man-made reservoirs along the SC-GA border. Along what was formerly the Savannah River, now lies Lakes Keowee, Hartwell, Russell, Thurmond, Murray, and Santee Cooper!

In the golden corner of SC, you're 2 hours aways from Atlanta, GA; Charlotte, NC; and Columbia, SC
Also has Greenville, SC - which is a great little city as well.

The wife would perfer Ocean water, I dont mind what it is as long as there are fish biting!

Im pretty sure that IF we head south, it will have to be in GA. more than likely Savannah, Pooler, or Tybee. Something in or around that area.
I want to go as far south as possible, but the wife need's her large Metro area fix as much as I need my nature, wildlife and peice and quiet.
