I noticed the pad, no big deal there. I owondered if that peep was factory as I didn't see the buckhorn sight on the barrel and it looked like the dovetail had a filler in it. As for drilling and tapping? Honest mods in spite of things. Like that knife, folks bought those things to use "back in the day".

I got a HELL of a deal on a pre-64 Mod 94 30-30 that had been drilled and tapped for a side mount a few years back. I'm not a big fan of the 30-30, but it was cheap and a REAL Winchester and I had some pocket money to burn at the time.

What is model and caliber of that old Remington? It looks like a dandy too.

Here's an 1872 Remington 10 Ga that belonged to my great great grandfather. He bought it new.

Wow a Remington Whitmore! I always wanted one of them.... I used to know the lifter variations, but I forget a lot these days. Does that one raise the hammers to half cock, with the lifter, or do you have to pull them to half cock manually?
The 141 is a .35 Rem.

It's the first model of the series, 1873, I posted it as an 1872 earlier, and had the best looking hammers ( to me anyway ) of the three. I believe the hammers "rebound" after firing if I remember right.

I used to collect old Smith & Wesson handguns. Sold them all years ago.

Here's the only one I have now and the only reason I have it is because I had sold it to my father-in-law and got it back after both of Sarah's parents had passed away.

It's a third model .32 S&W caliber double action break-top revolver in nickel with black gutta-percha S&W grips.

It has some kind of foreign proof marks, but I have no idea what country they signify.

British proof mark. After some research, I've found that particular mark means the gun was not made in England. Should have some other stamps on it elsewhere.

Interesting that particular gun went to the UK and made its way back home.

Nice pistola!

Interesting that it went, made it through the British anti-gun gauntlet and found it's way back without getting destroyed??

Thanks, Willie. I thought they might be British. I had another in .38 calibre that had the same marks and a swivel ring mounted on the bottom of the handle for a lanyard. Might have seen service with The Constabulary or similar force.

Nice guns garddogg.
Those look like powerful scopes. Do most folks use scopes in the Maine woods?

I hunt deer and bear with a Weatherby rifle chambered for the .270 Win cartridge, topped off with a 4x Zeiss scope with Conetrol mounts. I use handloads which I make up from a "recipe" which I got years ago from Jack O'Connor, long time shooting editor of Outdoor Life magazine. I get a chronograph velocity of 3210 fps with a 130 grain Sierra BT bullet.
Life would be meaningless if we couldn't wish for anything.

FRJ; The scopes we use are all raised mounts for most of the deer are in very thick woods and are shot within 50 yards so we are able to use are open sights under the scopes. Are scopes are not powerful they are only 3x9x40mm except for the Simmons on the Remington that is a 3x9x32mm ::smirk::

Thanks garddogg. I was wondering about what it's like up in Maine. I've never been there. My loss. But you hear about the Maine woods and it conjures up a close invironment of woods and brush. At least in my mind.
The concept of raised mounts is so practicle. My friend has a gun set up like that. He doesn't hunt and neither do I, but we love guns and we love to shoot paper.

I hunt deer with a Browning A-Bolt II chambered for the 7mm-08 short action, with a Leupold Vari-X II 3x9x40.
I use Hornady 139gr SST from a box that clear out at 3000fps. I sight in an inch high at 100yd and it gives it
a MPBR of about 220yds, give or take. Our ground here in SE AK is broke up and can be brushy, mosts shots
are about 40-60yds.

I built this rifle in High School in 1969. Worked on the stock in shop class, even fitted the action IN SCHOOL! Did all the metal work at the gunshop where I had a part time job. 6.5X55MM Swedish Mauser. Mod 1895. 16.5" bbl, Bishop stock, Timney sett triggers. Originally had a K-4 Weaver in those Redfield quick detach rings. Saved my money and put a 2X7 Leupold on it. Sold it twice and bought it back back twice. I'll keep it this go round. I have no earthly idea how many coyotes, deer, and antelope have been killed with this rifle. Longest shot I ever made with it was a tad over 440 yards at an antelope in Wyoming. I had at least 6' hold over on him, got lucky and put that 139gr bullet through his heart. Won three bottles of whiskey with that shot. If I'd a missed, I'd have been out three bottles of whiskey.

If I'm just fooling around and don't really care if I get a deer or not, I use this rig.

.40 Lancaster school flinter built by Bill Mowery ( dec'd) in 1981. I've won a lot of money with that rifle in years past. My "buddies" made fun of it. I used to haul it in the rifle rack and they always had something stupid to say about it. I'd challenge them to an off hand shoot at a beer can on a fence post at 50 yards and they could use their big scope sighted magnum whatever. I payed 5 bucks every time I missed and they paid 5 bucks every time they missed. I didn't miss much, just enough to keep 'em interested in losing their money. ;)

Word finally got out and they got tired of getting their butts whipped so the market dried up on that game, but not before most all of 'em made sure their buddies lost some money too. It was fun while it lasted.

That rifle was made for offhand shooting.

It's about 25 years old nowadays. One of several I made back in the 80's. All my really cool ones got traded off. LOL
Here's a better pic.

I made one out a blonde cowhorn. It held a pound and half of powder. I scraped it way down and you could see the powder level in it. Bad part about it was that the curl made it a right hand horn and I carry mine on the left. I'm right handed but it just works better for me hang my horn on the left side.

Bob, that Hatfield is a beauty! AND you're right about shooting a flinter. you'll either learn to "follow through" with your shot or you won't hit s...! Shooting that flinter made a BIG improvement in my off hand shooting. ;)

Please explain "follow through" to me as it relates to shooting a flint lock.

follow through....black powder burns off slow jerry...
pull the trigger...cap pops off...or flint strikes spark...
then powder burns off, until the round leaves the barrel...

an you have to hold the weapon steady on target while all this is happening...or miss the target

it is way cool to shoot slow motion... ::super_happy::
