Hi All,

I'm back after a temporary hiatus filled with doctors and their uninspiring knives and other implements of destruction. But enough of that.

I bid on a knife on the 'bay that had a crummy picture with little detail. It was listed as a 3OT but it was clearly a knife with green scales and brass bolsters. AHA, thought I, a misread tang stamp of a 5OTG and with few bidders. I won the bid.

Imagine my surprise when it arrived today. It is not a 5OTG. It is a gosh-danged 3OT with green scales and brass bolsters!!!

Wonders never cease.

P.S. This is a good thing, as I almost gave up on Schrades after purchasing three 858s this year, two in the last month - none of which are actually 1095 even though not marked Schrade+. Five mint 858OTs and every danged one of them are stainless! If anyone has a legitimate carbon steel 858 in near mint condition I would trade a mint Schrade and a mint Schrade+ for it.

P.P.S. Oh yeah, I also scored a mint ST6 with scabbard too! Hot Dang! Dale is right - it is the best thing since sliced bread!

So, more unusual finds:

In the spirit of the crass commercialization of a religious holiday, I have been gathering gifts for the male relatives. This year I decided to give them, wait for it..., knife related items! I know, this is quite astonishing. Or not.

Thinking they needed a proper battery of edged tools I have appropriated a set of items for each. These include a Case 63087, a Schrade 5OTG, a Schrade ST1 and a (tailored to the individual) knife from an unnamed country of origin with the initials RR. (To those of you who would take issue and get your panties all in a wad I can only say "kiss my a$$ 'cause it's my money!")

The very interesting part of this is the variance in the ST1 multitools I have garnered. Some early ones have "Pat. Pending" and others have actual patent numbers issued inscribed on them. Not surprising at all. What I took note of is the fact that the early ST1 tools had a 3 piece plier nose while the later versions had a one piece cast nose. I found it amusing that the cast versions had fake rivets in order to keep with the general appearance of the original.

More interesting yet is the one shown below with patent numbers, 3 piece nose and a decidedly different scraper blade. It is shorter and includes the wire insulation scraper notch included on the screwdriver/chisel blade of the other models. Very interesting indeed.

Finally, I acquired an ST6 with Schrade sheath. This is my ToughGrip. There are many others like it but this one is mine!! It is truly the neatest tool of all.

I buy knives for friends and relatives every Christmas and they always seem to like them. In particular, I look for something out of the ordinary for my daughter. Last year she got a tiny Hammer brand jack, the thing was not much more than an inch long but just as tight and snappy as a full sized knife. Old Goat, I bet everyone on your list appreciates their gift - you can't go wrong with a pocket knife.

Have you found this second collaboration between Schrade & Vise Grip?
The needle nose version was the one Schrade marketed, pipe jaw tool was marketed by Vise Grip.

Dale;WOW I did not know those were in colaberation with Scharade we have a dozen of those in a gangbox at a papermill we use those for fitting up unistrut for welding I learn something new everyday,you can't kill those Visegrips and those blades we abuse

Dale, that is an amazing item! And no, I was previously unaware of it until your post.

This answers several questions I have pondered, however.

Firstly, referring to my former post with the OddManOUtScraper.jpg, I now see from whence the unusual scraper blade on one of my ST1 tools originated. It was clearly destined for your collaberation #2 tool. It must have ended up in the incorrect parts bin that day for my ST1.

Secondly, the scabbard that was included with my second ST6 was what I assumed was for a standard needle-nosed ViseGrip sans the Schrade attachment, as it is not a perfect fit for the thicker grip and is marked ViseGrip rather than Schrade. (Question: was this scabbard ever offered with the ST1 or only with the ST6?)

Naturally, your post set me off on yet another quest - this time, perhaps - for Unobtanium! I can only imagine that finding an example will take me a very, very long time.

After a bit of browsing, I did find out that the original ViseGrip pipe jaw tool is called the "Original(TM) Large Jaw Locking Pliers" on the Irwin Tool website and apparently is marketed in England as the "Franklin ViseGrip Curved Jaw" by the Franklin Co in Sheffield.

It is possible, Schrade did make some of Buck's knives at one time.

I will have to dig for it, but I think I have a Schrade of similar construction.
