Knife restoration advice

When my uncle passed away a few years ago, my aunt gave me a few of his old knives. They aren't in great condition and i was wondering if anyone could tell me just what kind of knives they are, as well as, any tips you might have for restoring them.

Hangman, Welcome.

The first knife is a Case Hunter (pattern number 6265). It looks like it has wood handles. Case called it pakkawood. You should be able to figure out approx when it was made by what the stamping on the tang looks like. Check out this link for that info... http://www.allaboutpocketknives.com/wr_ ... cation.php


The second knife is a Schrade old timer stockman. It should have a number stamped on the tang. something like 8ot or 34ot. If it says Schrade-walden on the tang it was made before 1973. If it says just Schrade, after 1973.


The third is a TL-29. Known as an electricians knife. Most likely made by Camillus.

Very cool to have a momento of your late uncle.
I'm sure someone will have some advice on what to do as far as cleaning them up.

The electrician's knife sounds like it has a broken backspring.....Fixable. The Schrade sounds like wear has caused weak action on the backsprings....Fixable. The folding hunter sounds like it was stored in a leather sheath. This causes moisture retained in the leather to transfer to the knife in the form of corrosion on the brass and nickel-silver and rust on the blade.....Fixable. Don't expect anyone to be able to return these knives to mint condition, but it isn't as hopeless as you might think.

My old Case 6265 was lost (to me) for several years. I had left it in the leather sheath along with the marlin spike, in the storage room of our fish camp down on Baja Mexico. Probably 7 years later, repairing some storm damage I located it - - the remains of the disentigrated leather sheath, the spike and the old Case Hunter. The knife was somewhat worse for the wear, lots of "green" stuff on the bolsters but easily cleaned up and restored. My Papa, an Arizona Saddlemaker, made me a new scabbard and even though I don't carry it it is still in VGC.
