Are you sure it is a Connecticut company? I have never heard of them and usually when the name "Co". is stamped in that manner the knife was made in Germany

no, I am not sure that the knife is from Connecticut; especially since I tried to find it in Goins and did not see a listing for a Plymouth company. I tried to look the knife up after posting to secure a mfg. date. I thought sure I had seen a Plymouth stamp before in Goins. I have another Plymouth and I thought I had pegged it.
So.................ya recon I got a German knife here? Well, I would prefer Connecticut, but it's such a well made knife I guess I don't care.
I need to research these knives more. Once I bought an American Knife Co. stamp. .....Oh...... this is bad.....
When it showed up it was American Knife Co. ....Japan. OUCH!!!
I still live in Plymouth.

American Knife Company Plymouth Hollow and later just Plymouth Connecticut.

I think this is what you were thinking of. It is the only company mark with Plymouth that I have ever seen

Joe, Good morning from the left coast ! That truly is a fine looking jack. Those fine ebony handles really set that knife off. If you all don't mind, I would like to add a bit to the conversation. I don't have a Goin's for reference, I do have though a 2009 ed. of Blade's Guide to Knives & their Values. It's been a pretty good reference catalog. Under the Pocketknife Brand List section it has 3 listing's for American Knife Co., the first of which it states that they were located in Thomaston, CT. in parenthesis next to it stating ( Thomaston CT. called Plymouth Hollow CT. to 1875 ), made in U.S.A., a Mfr. firm, from 1840 -1911. Value- H ( high ). Then, the listing under that states; Trademark ( or reference ) Kendal, 1948; Bukar- 1955; Location - Winsted, CT., USA, a Mfr. firm from 1919 -1955, Value - H. The third listing; Trademark, for Cole National Corp; Location - Cleve. Ohio; Made in Japan / Ger.; Type of firm-import c1970; Value - L ( low ). But IMHO, your find easily falls into one of the first two categories. It's a great looking knife ! Congratulations Dale H. I have Blades guide as well. 2005 ed. and it states exactly as you say.
I don't think (and I wish I were wrong) that this is an "American Knife" associated stamp.
I'm inclined to think it is German, but I can't prove that either.
I really appreciate your interest in the knife, Dale.
I really enjoy this research and responding with like minded folks like you and others who have contributed to this thread. I'm going to sharpen this knife and carry it for a while. Thanks.

Oh, your welcome Joe. I'm currently carrying a Wolstenholm IXL, much about the same size as your knife. It has wonderful steel in the blade, and takes a great edge. I've had a lot of positive comments when I pull my knife out and people see it. They built them good in those day's. Have a good one ! Dale

Trevor, That is a fine looking Jack ! But I must ask a ?, the difference I never seem to be able to keep clear in my mind. Is the pattern a serpentine, or a dog leg? And is a dog leg a serpentine at the same time? Regardless, it's a very fine looking knife, and I especially like the stag pattern handles. Dale

GEC calls that #56 pattern a Reverse Dogleg. They have a #66 they call a Serpentine Jack.
Both models are excellent knives, can't wait for the 2012 run of the #66 Serp's, should be sweet!!
--GEC, if you see this....lets do some Elk on the Serps and Doglegs this year.... .

I find my doglegs all slip from the small end.

The Case in the picture has a secondary pen behind the main with an easy open for the nick.
Mabey that's a reverse.??
