Woodworking Project

Last week I spent 2 full days at my uncle's working in his cabinet shop in Garrett County, MD. He's a cabinet maker by profession and has been working his craft for over 30 years now. He pretty much has every piece of equipment needed for the job and has learned a few tricks of the trade over the years.

Basically, I'm using rough-cut walnut 1 1/4" boards and making a 2 piece gun cabinet for long guns, hand guns, ammo and accessories. All the wood was milled several years ago from logs cut by my Dad on our farm and stored in one of our barns. It's nice and dry at this stage.

I've included some pictures of my uncle's shop and the wood I'm using. So far I have the 2 long gun cabinet sides ready for sanding and finishing. I expect this project to run through the summer as it's about a 3 hour drive from my place in Virginia to his shop. I'll post more pictures as the cabinet progresses.

Almost forgot, I am going to make some 3˝ drawers for knives too!

I'm going 40" long with a 30" high base and a 56" high long gun top. I hope to make my own metal drawer pulls out of something gun or knife related, still thinking about it . . .

You are a fortunate man to have all that at your disposal. And it is considerable. Nice tools and shop.
I know it's a one man job, but I wish I could help you. I could sand or sweep up or something.

Nice work. Love that shop and that walnut. Antler tines make nice drawer pulls and so do stick tang pommels.

Thanks for the idea, Iron! My bro was ATVing in Western Maryland a month ago and found these in the woods. At first he just saw one but his bud told him to look around a little, the other was probably close by. Sure enough he found them both and said he had a surprise for me. Man was I tickled! Shed antlers and no dragging, skinning and processing involved.





I might get to do some more work this coming weekend.
