Lost A Friend This Past Tuesday

Post by jerryd6818 »

An old friend of close to 50 years and one of our little 'band of brothers' that all went to work for NCR about the same time, passed away on Tuesday July 3rd. Jon had prostrate cancer that had been found too late and spread into his bones. He hadn't told any of us (just like him) so when his son called another of our group with the news, it was quite the shock. He had gone to live with his son in Virginia and will be buried this coming Monday in the Marine Corps cemetery at Quantico Virginia with full military honors (Jon was Army).

God rest your soul Jon Petersen. You are already sorely missed. ::teary_eyes::

Thank you one and all. This is the first one of my close friends to go. I guess it had to begin somewhere and I should thank God it didn't start with me.

Jerry, we are a stoical, stubborn bunch of old vets. We hold things close to the vest. That's what your friend did. He just couldn't bring himself to reach out to his friends, to share his very serious problem.

Those of us that are left out, feel betrayed, I think. We would like to have been able to help with what ever little we could.

It hurts that we couldn't.

God Bless you, Jerry.

God's Speed to Jon.

God's Peace to his family and friends.

Charlie summed it up pretty good. Have lost a couple of good friends under similar circumstances.

Got a Marine buddy in the last stages of prostate cancer such as your friend had he's going into the final stages now.

Hang in there and respect him for not wanting to be a burden.

Thank you one and all. Another reason AAPK is such a great site.

Jon will be buried with full military honors at 1000 on Monday at Quantico. There will be a synchronous event (0900 local time) at one of the VFWs here in town. They will blow taps and fire a 21 gun salute. From the guys I've talked to, it looks like most of the old NCR crowd that's still able to get around will attend.

RIP Jon.

Jerry I feel for your loss. I lost two good friends (an old high school buddy and a 30+ year co-worker) within a three day span last fall. It's not easy. I'll pray for you and his family.

The little "memorial service" the VFW put on this morning was nice. Almost all the guys he worked with at NCR, that are still in the area, showed up (one was working out of town and the other, Lord knows about him). Thank you all for your respect.
