Can't say I'm surprised this happened, but you'd think the U.S. Olympic Committee (or at least one of the members) would've used better judgment.

Not a real smart decision by the comittee, but the congressional response is pure theatrics.
Talk about gagging at a gnat and swallowing an elephant ! Take a look at our balance of trade, particularly
with China, and how little Congress has done to rectify that financial disaster. Put that in perspective
before you get to thinking that our congressional leaders really give a hoot. The are, after all, the ones who have
allowed the industrial base of this country to erode to the sad state it's in today. This selective moral outrage over
the Olympic uniforms is political pandering, nothing more.

Oh, members of Congress give a hoot all right. About themselves and every $$$$$$$$$$$$$ they can divert into their own bank accounts before they're voted out of office.
Want to generate some capital for the general fund? Start selling hunting license for politicians and lawyers. Oh, wait! Isn't that the same thing?

Too true, Phil. If Congress gave a real damn then they would stop awarding contracts to US companies that move their headquarters overseas so they don't have to pay certain federal taxes.philco wrote:the congressional response is pure theatrics.
Quite frankly all politicians are just out for their own interests. Do Republicans really think corporations are people? Do Democrats really worry about their carbon footprints? No on both counts. But those are the groups that give them money, so that's what they tell you they believe.
It's one of the reasons why with our current system of government there's never going to be anybody in power who can fix this country. Republican or Democrat, you'll lose no matter which party you vote for. Sad to say, but it wouldn't surprise me at all if this country collapses in my lifetime just like the USSR did. Look closely and you'll see that for decades now the US has been making the same policy errors that led to the USSR's collapse.

Being the politically correct nation we are, in hot pursuit of world peace, all while not wanting offend any nationality, race or creed, it seems to me that the reason the uniforms were made overseas is because we probably have a mixed selection of nationalities on the board, and so selecting an American manufacturer do make the uniforms might cause offense to other non-full blooded Americans, so imported products were selected.
It's all about World Peace. See? Simple.

The worst part of the entire episode is putting our athletes in that dumb looking French beret!
Deep in the guts of most men is buried the involuntary response to the hunter's horn, a prickle of the nape hairs, an acceleration of the pulse, an atavistic memory of his fathers, who killed first with stone, and then with club...Robert Ruark

Worse than the Army beret (and that is saying something) - at least you can shave, shape and scullcap the Army beret - the Olympic team look like painters from a French movie.

Re: You'd think they'd know better...
I've been stewing on this one all day today off and on. I've come up with a solution.
Our congressmen and senators need to donate THEIR PERSONAL MONEY to pay for new olympic uniforms to be produced by American workers. No tax money should be used. Here's their chance to prove to us this means so much to them.
I'm waiting..........................

Re: You'd think they'd know better...
I dug a bit deeper and found out something that the article didn't mention. Ralph Lauren actually designed and donated the uniforms to the Olympic athletes. US Olympic teams are not funded by the government. They work directly off of sponsors and donations from companies like Ralph Lauren.
So why is Congress only "fuming" at the Olympic Committee and not the people who made the uniforms? I guess they didn't really take the time to review something they are allegedly upset about.

The reason they were made in China is was the only place outside France where they would make such ugly uniforms!
