Gloucester fishing trip

Occasionally, I get invited to events by manufacturers and distributors as a thank you for the business I do with them.

Friday, 12 of us went out deep sea fishing out of Gloucester. We split up onto 2 boats. There was no sun all day, but that was alright. Here are some pics...

I'm the sketchy looking dude in the middle



Normally, we catch alot of cod, and not many Haddock. This time it was the other way around. We also caught a bunch of dogfish. We saw a pod of dolphins, and we had a 6' blue shark circling our boat at one point.

Sadly, I did not take any action pics while fishing, I was too bust trying to catch my limit. We ended up with over 60 keepers, and we had a very fresh fish dinner when I got home.

BTW, this marina is where the boats on "Wicked Tuna" come out of...

Great pics Glen! Makes me homesick lol. spent many years on the ocean fishing(or should I say ATTEMPTING to fish)from my father-in-law's boat.Used to run out of the Winter Hill Marina.My best friend's dad was a Gloucester fisherman all his life and was lost at sea.His name is on the Statue.We used to be way out past the Boston Light Ship and more than once had to race a storm back to shore.
My biggest catches were a good sized squid and a Rock Cod both caught while jigging for blues.The squid made good bait and the cod was just plain the ugliest fish I'd ever seen.
We were out one time and had this huge sunfish on the surface next to the boat.My idiot brother-in-law tried to gaff it and nearly got dragged overboard.The gaff is probably still attached to the fish.
Anyway thanks again for the pics;I'll be out that way the end of August for my son's wedding and hope to get some ocean time.At least some lobster and steamers if the Red Tide hasn't got 'em all.

I wish I was able to do this more often. The boat captains and mates are interesting people, especially the mates. They are the grizzled sea dogs, running around doing everything on the boat. They must surely love what they do, cause I can't imagine they make a ton of money chasing after us landlubbers on the boat.

There are some really beautiful places along the water in this area Johnnie;one of the wildest is just south of there called Hammond Castle.It is a museum now but used to be a private residence.The owner purchased an English castle;had it dis-mantled stone by stone and shipped to the USA where it was re-assembled right on the water.
If you drive along Route 127 which starts in Beverly MA and runs to Gloucester you will see some of the most incredible mansions anywhere.One of them is the old Sears estate(built by the founder of Sears,Roebuck & Co.).It was split up in the 1970's and a guy I used to work for bought the carriage house.The horse stalls were big enough to store cars in(which he did;he had a substantial vintage Mercedes-Benz collection)and he and his family lived upstairs.They had a huge family room that sported a huge fireplace and he also had displayed 5 vintage Mercedes cars in it.
There was another one along the same road that had a hundred and thirty rooms! You can drive along for several miles and see nothing but huge houses like that. There is also an all girls college along that route so there is a goodly amount of traffic along there in the spring and early summer.
If there is one thing I miss about New England it is the ocean.I don't miss the traffic jams one bit.

Thanks for the info, K7K. ..I had heard of the Castle .... but nothing about the "Sears Mansion"....I can't imagine what it looked like if the "Carriage House" was that immense.
