For my viewing pleasure, my cousin's husband broke out his small collection Monday night while I was there. It's some pistols ,a couple of shotguns and a .22 rifle. The rifle is a Colt Lightening pump chambered for .22 shorts. Has some mechanical issues because his brother is a D.A. (dumb ass) but the wood is beautiful. I couldn't get a picture so y'all will have to make do with an Internet picture and yes it does have the somewhat rare Lyman No. 15 Wind Gauge Tang Sight that's shown in the picture. The rifle lives in a nice cedar box someone built for it.

After seeing the Model 11 Remington I had to dig mine out.
Mine is a sweet/not so sweet gun. Sweet, in that it was my Pops and not so sweet because it looks like it went through an 8th grade shop class with round screwdrivers and guess work to MOUNT A SCOPE! and put on and ruin a perfectly good Pachmayr butt pad.
It's been around awhile. My dad died in 53. I just can't imagin he would put a scope on the thing knowing what I know of him.
I have several other accessories for the Cutts.
I was thinking of having the barrel shortened and using it as a home defence weapon but came to understand that the barrel recoil should be supported by solidly shouldering the gun. That may or may not happen in a gun fight.
Gun fight.... that doesn't sound good.

EDIT: Unk, Johnnie R. and my gun have different safety placement from yours. Can you date design change?

You guys have some great guns. It's really nice to see them.

Thanks, Johnnie.
Ya, it's John Brownings Model 11, so whats not to like.
Last time I shot it it wouldn't eject a spent case properly.
I researched the proper friction ring placement as per haveing a Cutts Compensater mounted on it.
I think I've got it right. Easy to change if not. I need to shoot it.

Blue, that's a fine looking Enfield ::tu::

Joe, I also like your old Rem 11. Mine was given to me by my father, too. That makes it special.

I think they switched the safety in 1928, if I am not mistaken - Remington told me mine was made in 1924.

If you call Remington at the number below and give them the serial number they will tell you when yours was made:

Remington 1-800-243-9700

We just got home from Fort Worth this evening - had a great time on Friday shooting sporting clays with my old High School buddies. I need some work - only hit 44 out of 100 - but had a great time. The old Remington 58 I have been working on performed flawlessly - 100 rds with no jams or hiccups. The place is called Fossil Pointe Sporting Grounds - about 500 acres near Decatur, TX. Sporting Clays is kinda' like golf - you drive around to 12 stations and shoot 4 or 5 pairs of clays at each station - some high, some low, some coming at you, some going away, etc. Thank goodness I didn't come in last.....I was 3rd out of 4 - ::groove::

Notice in the second picture, the bolt is open and the ejected shell is flying out - and you can see the orange clay I missed  still flying over by the tree.

....and this lil' feller followed me home. All in all it was a pretty good weekend!

Colt LE 6940
Flip up/down iron sights
adjustable stock
monolithic rail
red dot scope
Colt lasermax front grip.

I always liked the traditional guns - blued steel and walnut stocks.....then I shot one of these AR 15s while hog hunting earlier this year. I figure I am open-minded enough that I can now appreciate both traditional and tactical arms. ...and I figured I better get one of these while we still can........

Blue thats a nice looking S.M.L.E. I hunted with one in .303 when I was a kid.
FRJ, as Unk said you can call Remington to get that nice model 11 of yours date of manufacture or you can check the barrel codes on the left side of the barrel and get the month and year it was made by going to www.remingtonsociety.com. and matching your code to the list there. All Remington shotguns made after 1921 have them. A call to Remington can get you a date on when the safeties were changed. I have a FN/Browning made in 1926 that has the safety in the front of the trigger guard. Course FN/Browning and Remington didn't do everything at the same time. Do you think it's possible the receiver on your model 11 was drilled and tapped for a scope to shoot slugs for deer maybe?
Unk, you did real good even after someone bent your shotgun's sight to cause you to miss. ::sneaky:: ::paranoid:: I hate when my friends do me like that. I like that N.I.B. Colt flat top. Nice rifle. ::tu::
big monk thats a sweet looking XD pistol. Everyone of them I've shot have been dead on with the factory set sights. I like the XD's but can't get use to the back strap safety. I keep thinking Glock every time I shoot one of those XD's for some reason. Don't know why I can't get use to the back strap safety because a 1911 style pistol doesn't bother me with it's safety. ::shrug:: Me thinks it has more to do with the big nut behind the trigger than anything wrong with the pistols when I shoot. ::hmm::
There are some nice firearms being shown on this thread. I like them all and haven't seen a bad one yet.

Hi:
I recently acquired a Savage Super Sporter as marked on the front left side of the receiver. Should anyone be knowledgeable on these I have a question. I am pretty sure it is a model 45 or at the least a 40 but there are no number markings that I can find. Where are the numerical marks? I will eventually photograph and post it here. It has a checkered pistol grip and the same for the forearm. The bluing is 90%+ There is no peep site, it is a flat Marbles type buckhorn(unmarked) it still has the distance elevator in place, the front is a dove tail drift for azimuth. Any help will be appreciated.

Edit: Have been away all day , here are some photo.s. The serial shown in the fifth shows the piece to have been manf. in the mid to late 30's. Production was ceased in 40.

this article says it is marked modle 45 somewhere on the piece...usually up with the savage name, or the cal.
perhaps it is on the barrel under the top edge of the stock?

Gringo:
I must be losing grasp on reality cause I already had that link and had read it several times. I just got through reading it several more times and I can't find any thing relating to the model 45 marking placement. Did you notice how his photo of what he calls the 45 has no checkering, Go figure. Mine has the flat rear site with no screw holes at the rear left of receiver. Also mine has the serial of the 24,xxx range. I wonder how that happened if only 18,000 were made. I bet they started the numbering in sequence with where the previous model left off. Maybe something such as a history analyzer needs to be invented for firearms as well as knives. Possibly some sort of chemical Xray scanner that would retrieve the DNA of all the folks who ever touched the gun and relate that to their specialties in the firearm manufacturing and engineering field. That would truly be a miracle.
This piece going on 75 or so years old is not going to be taken apart and given the once over, not by me anyway. To much old wood to pull screws out of and reinsert into. Always a possibility of stripping or cracking. Thanks for your interest and help. I may move down that way someday. If so who knows we just might think about opening a research facility for Cutters and Boomers.

Moss, you will not find a marking of "model 45" or "Model 40" anywhere on the rifle if you took it apart. The difference between the two models is mostly cosmetic only, and the cosmetics were mostly on the wood. The marking of "Super Sporter" I.D.'s the rifle as being the Savage model 40/45. The plain jane stocked version would be the model 40, and the checkered fancier stock version would be the model 45. The stocks will interchange between the two. There were around 5000+ to 6000 of the fancier Super Sporter model 45's made. A serial number in the 18xxx range is said to put the rifle being made around the 1930's. Your rifles serial number would put it being made at or near the end of the production time of the Savage Super Sporter in 1940. The fancier Super Sporter model 45's didn't get a separate serial number range than the plain jane model 40. No one has stated that the Super Sporter model 40 or 45 serial numbers began at 00001. As far as anyone knows the first serial number on a Super Sporter model 40/45 could have started off with 16000 or 17000, for example. You can contact Savage Arms by phone or E-mail and possibly get a year of manufacture for your rifle. You may be also be able to get the beginning serial number range for the Savage Super Sporter and the ending serial number range. You have a great part of Savage firearm history there as well as a fine rifle. Congrats. on owning it.

Thanks for the verification of my thoughts. Yes it is a nice old rifle. As with the most of my treasures I will keep it through an election or two and then use it as barter for something else I just have to have at the time.
