Only the photos at the very first as a child and that at the last in his dress greens are of MSG Roy Benavidez.

All the other photos are of other units in Viet Nam.

He is a legend in Special Forces.

And, it was and still is, a crying shame how him, his act of absolute selfless courage and the awarding of the Medal of Honor to him were handled. Because he was "Messican", he was pretty much denied the medal by The Department of The Army. His immediate superiors, his Team Mates, Special Forces and his wife, feisty little woman that she is, were ultimately responsible for the injustice being corrected.

Note that he received the award from President Reagan, long after the end of the Viet Nam War.

He became very ill and died relatively young.

Social Security and the Defense Department had withdrawn or severely reduced his disability and retirement benefits and then when he did pass away, they tried to curtail or deny continued payments to his wife.

She finally won that battle. The little woman took on the entire U.S. Government. She won, not in the courts, but in the court of public opinion.

She made sure that as many people as possible knew what was being done to her incapacitated husband and then to herself as an Army widow.

MSG Benavidez was the kind of man you wanted at your back.

His wife is the kind of woman you want, period.

Rest In Peace, Master Sergeant. You earned it.

As I understand it, Benavidez was put in for the MOH almost immediately by his superiors and fellow SF Soldiers.

The events of his story, if I'm not mistaken, took place in Cambodia, across the border from Loc Nien, which was the launch point.

The reason I think this is he went to assist a "twelve man team". That sounds like a SOG recon team to me and they encountered a heavy assault soon after insertion into Cambodia, a country that we only operated in in secrecy.

Anyway, his recommendation worked its way up the chain of command and somewhere along the line some bigoted SOB pegion-holed it.

That doesn't explain the assault on his and his wife's benefits. That's probably a whole 'nother story.
