Very nice work Donald!
I like it.

I have always liked incorporating a bit of sapwood on handles when I can, especially when the difference is so striking.
That transition from light to dark is quite striking in your handles.
The wormholes add more visual interest and appeal to my eye.

Well executed! ::tu:: ::tu:: ::tu:: ::tu::

ironwood doesn't normally need a seal...but since i used the sap wood, a lot softer than than heart, i used some old urethane...big mistake, wouldn't dry..stayed tacky...so i scraped it off..steel wool, then some tongue oil...

I like the two-tone look of it. Looks like a real solid user.

That's just the knife blade, right?

Nice work!

i finally figured out my gift with knives...i can take a perfectly good knife and 'antique' the thing in about three days.

this was a fine little cami TL-29...left out the lock an screwdriver blade...
drilled the hole for a bail...maybe later...
the elk was flat when i mounted it...then it just seemed to creep about...wonder if it is the heat or what out here?
i use a straight edge...glue, drill mount, an then wamo...gaps an how did that happen stuff...
this one opens right up...snaps from half stop...do not have fingers in the way..this is a sharp old blade.

It looks nice Donald.

Heat does strange things to different materials; what type & brand of glue did you use?
Heat can cause most glues to fail, but I doubt it got that hot even in AZ.

Looks good, Gringo! ::tu::
Elmers won't stick to metal and it's about 70% water, so that may have been part of the problem. Epoxy is really your best bet. Something you might try when flattening your slabs, is to put a piece of sandpaper down on a true flat surface. I use the cast iron table on my table saw. Put pencil marks on the backs of your slabs and work them over the sandpaper until all the pencil marks are gone. That should give you a true flat back on your slabs. Hope this helps.

working with horn is a lot easier than stag or bone...cept one has to be careful...horn warps, and burns from the heat generated by power sanding....
it also needs less effort to form...so it is easier to make a mistake in quicktime.

I didn't know either so I looked it up. A picture is worth a thousand words. From a 1978 Camillus catalog.

All of a sudden I think I understand your question. A TL-29 is a military designation. Stands for Tool Linesman. The #27 is Camillus pattern number. Case calls 'em an 031. Personally, I like the generic military TL-29 label.

Is that what you were looking for or did you already know all that?

What ever made you think that? I liked all three of 'em, especially the last one. That horn looks really good. I just got caught up in the off topic discussion (as usual).

I liked them too Gringo, and like Jerry, I like the horn the best. I ask because they're always referred to as a TL-29, but Camillus lists them as a "27", even in the 1946 catalog. Think you're right on the TL-29 being a military designation and the 27 a civilian.

I also liked what you did, sorry for not saying that.

I asked the question about the horn cause I also have some, and am planning on using it for a future project.

BTW, knife looks great!

i like the ease of horn...but the layers seperate if you apply too much heat...and the grain is like some woods...splits along the edges..
you just have to pay attention...go slow..
i have access to one more of those horns...i bought the parts pile.
.i don't have a way to slab material out...cept by hand...
