Shades of Green

Sarah, myself, my son, daughter-in-law and three of our grandchildren just spent a week at Shades of Green at Walt Disney World in Orlando.

For the unaware, Shades of Green is owned and operated, to Disney's standards, by the Department of The Army.

It is generally open only to active duty, retired or combat disabled members of the uniformed services or the unremarried spouse of a combat casualty service member.

However, two months each year, in January and September, it is open to any honorably discharged veteran of any of the uniformed services. All you need is a vaild DD-214.

Sarah and I paid $159.00 per night to stay in a 480 square foot room. The rooms are larger than any in the park to accomodate disabled persons.

That price included a breakfast buffet, not a Continental breakfast, a buffet, that ordinarily costs $10.95 per person and a dinner buffet each night that is usually $15.95.

There were NO Taxes. No sales tax, State tax, federal tax. Not the usual Florida hotel occupancy tax. No taxes in the gift shop, either.

Eight days, seven nights, in the park, close to the Magic Kingdom, with three world class golf courses attached and two meals per day for under one thousand dollars.

And, the qualifying service member can obtain two additional rooms for the same price. My son paid what I paid, except there were five of them.

Park tickets, purchased at Shades of Green, are discounted as well.

Highly recommended.

Took my family to Disney World in Orlando in 2004, after my return from OIF - we stayed at Shades of Green and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves - glad to hear it is still up to the same standards of excellence.

One more thing; The room rate you pay is based on your highest achieved rank.

And contrary to life on active duty where "rank has its privileges", the lower your rank, the greater the discount. The higher your rank, the more you pay.

That $159.00 rate I quoted was the E-5 rate. E-1, E-2, E-3 or E-4 would be even less.

Jerry, January might not be a bad idea. It was in the high 80's every day last week, very humid and scattered thunderstorms almost every afternoon.

Of course, they have had freezing weather in Orlando in January on occasion.
